"The Last Time" as written by Taylor Swift, Gary Lightbody and Jacknife Lee....
Found myself at your door,
Just like all those times before,
I'm not sure how I got there,
All roads they lead me here.

I imagine you are home,
In your room, all alone,
And you open your eyes into mine,
And everything feels better,

Right before your eyes,
I'm breaking, no past
No reasons why,
Just you and me.

This is the last time I'm asking you this,
Put my name at the top of your list,
This is the last time I'm asking you why,
You break my heart in the blink of an eye, eye, eye.

You find yourself at my door,
Just like all those times before,
You wear your best apology,
But I was there to watch you leave,

And all the times I let you in,
Just for you to go again,
Disappear when you come back,
Everything is better.

Right before your eyes,
I'm aching, no past
Nowhere to hide,
Just you and me

This is the last time I'm asking you this,
Put my name at the top of your list,
This is the last time I'm asking you why,
You break my heart in the blink of an eye, eye, eye

This is the last time you tell me I've got it wrong,
This is the last time I say it's been you all along,
This is the last time I let you in my door,
This is the last time, I won't hurt you anymore.

Oh, oh, oh,

This is the last time I'm asking you this,
Put my name at the top of your list,
This is the last time I'm asking you why,
You break my heart in the blink of an eye.

This is the last time I'm asking you this (this is the last time I'm asking you this)
Put my name at the top of your list (put my name on the top of your list)
This is the last time I'm asking you why (this is the last time I'm asking you why)
You break my heart in the blink of an eye (You break my heart)

This is the last time I'm asking you,
Last time I'm asking you,
Last time I'm asking you this

This is the last time I'm asking you,
Last time I'm asking you,
Last time I'm asking you this

This is the last time I'm asking you,
Last time I'm asking you,
Last time I'm asking you this

This is the last time I'm asking you,
Last time I'm asking you,
Last time I'm asking you this

My InterpretationOkay, so my general rule with duets is trying to analyze the story from the two different perspectives that we're being given. So, I'm doing it verse by verse through the eyes of Taylor and Gary.

"I found myself at your door, just like all those times before
But I'm not sure how I got there
All roads, they lead me here
I imagine you are home, in your room, all alone
And you open your eyes into mine and everything feels better"

For this first part, I think he's saying that he knows he always leaves, for whatever reason, whether it be because he's scared of committing to her (which I think is most likely) or because he's doesn't love her as much as she loves him (less likely). But even though he leaves, he always finds his way back to her. And when he comes back, he expects her to be waiting, he can't imagine her moving on (notice he says he imagines her ALL ALONE). He's selfish that way. He knows she makes him feel better, so he selfishly wants to be the only one.

"Right before your eyes I'm breaking
    No past, no reasons why
    Just you and me"

I think this is his way of saying, "when you're here, I can break down." He knows she's going to be there for him, even though he's hurt her so much. The last line indicates that he feels like it's everything is okay when it's just them. I think this means he only comes to her when he needs someone to understand him.

This is the last time I'm asking you this
Put my name at the top of your list
This is the last time I'm asking you why
You break my heart in the blink of an eye, eye, eye

Now, I'm considering this 'his' chorus, not hers, since he just told his story. But what the chorus means for him, really is that, he want to be the only person she worries about. He knows he always leaves her, But, again, selfishly, he doesn't want her to move on. He's asking why she tries to. he doesn't understand.

"You find yourself at my door, just like all those times before
    You wear your best apology
But I was there to watch you leave
And all the time to let you in just for you to go again
    Disappear when you come back
    Everything is better"

Okay, Taylor's turn: This verse is easier. She's waited for him, hoping he'll come back like he always has, but she's grown up (or rather, she thinks she has), because she recounts in her mind all the times she let him come back after he was tired from everything else. But she's still weak, she loves him, and all of her resolve 'disappears' because she forgets the pain because him being there makes her feel loved and wanted and needed and that makes her happy.

"And right before your eyes I'm aching
    No past, nowhere to hide
    Just you and me"

Her: Since she's saying this now, I feel like she's telling him, "I'm falling apart because your back, but I fall apart when you're gone, I want wish we could start over. Just you and me." But she knows she can't. There's "nowhere to hide."

"This is the last time I'm asking you this
Put my name at the top of your list,
This is the last time I'm asking you why
You break my heart in the blink of an eye, eye, eye"

Since this is 'her' chorus, she's saying: I want you to put me first, stop leaving me. I don't want you to go out there looking for yourself, I want you to stay with me. But I think she knows this is useless. She knows he's going to leave her. And she's swearing this is the last time she's asking, but I think it's more of an intimidation.

"This is the last time you tell me I've got it wrong
This is the last time I say it's been you all along
This is the last time I let you in my door
This is the last time, I won't hurt you anymore, ohh"

Okay, this'll have two interpretations (hers & his):
Hers: I think he's telling her "You are on top of my list, you've always been there, you've got it wrong, you're my priority." but she knows she's not (hence the first line). Then, the third line is her telling him, this is it. She can't take this anymore. Decide.

Him: I think he's saying (as I mentioned earlier), "It's always been you. YOU are my priority, not anything else." And I LOVE this last line. Because the ending is up to the listener. You don't know if he's going to leave and not come back (and therefore, not hurt her anymore) or if he's going to stay and make her happy. Knowing Gary as I do, I seem the writing as him leaving because he recognizes how much he's hurt her and he blames himself for it.

"This is the last time I'm asking you this
Put my name at the top of your list
This is the last time I'm asking you why
You break my heart in the blink of an eye, eye, eye"

Now, this last chorus, I think...Symbolizes that this is never going to be the last time. He's destined to leave her and when he comes back, she'll let him back in because she loves him.

The repetition of this line "This is the last time I'm asking you..." at the end, I think just means that it's never going to be the last time. It leaves you feeling like there's so much unresolved and I think it's because that's how they feel.

    OKAY. that's all.

General Commenti think this is a song about a couple who've hurt each other in the past, but mainly he's hurt her. it seems that he's left her many times before just to get come back to her, because for whatever reason he can't stay away from her and this song from his perspective is an apology from him to her, when he says "This is the last time" it's meant as saying I promise not to hurt you again.
At the same time, she's been badly hurt by him many times before, and then he comes back and she can't help forgiving him, just for him to do the same thing all over again
"And all the times I let you in just for you to go again
    Disappear when you come back
    Everything is better"
the chorus from her perspective- she says "This is the last time" meaning that she's not going through this again, this is his last chance to make it up to her

My InterpretationSo, the song obviously shows a couple's relationship from 2 different sides; the male's (Gary Lightbody) and the female's (Taylor Swift). I created my own little backstory for the song about how in the end both sides get their heart broken in the end, so feel free to read it :)

At the beginning, when Lightbody is singing from the male's perspective, it seems like he's coming back to his girlfriend and begging for forgiveness even though he's left her so many times ('Found myself at your door, just like all those times before')

He knows he has little chance of getting her back but he's still there because he realized that he's made a mistake and that he can't be without her; 'Right before your eyes I'm breaking'

When he sings the chorus, he swears that it'll be the last time he'll leave her and that she's breaking his heart 'in the blink of an eye' by not taking him back.

Then comes Taylor singing the second verse in the female's perspective. She seems reluctant to take him back because once she has, he'll just leave her again like several times previously. It hurts her to say no to him ('Right before your eyes I'm aching') because she obviously still has feelings for him but doesn't want to get her heart broken once more.

At the bridge, it seems as though the female and male are arguing. The female is trying to get him to leave her home
'This is the last time you tell me I've got it wrong'

    The male says to her in his own way that she's the love of his life;
'This is the last time I say it's been you all along'

    The female still attempts to get him to leave her alone because she can't stand watching him ditch her again if she takes him back;
'This is the last time I let you in my door'

The man is still trying as hard as he can to win her back by telling her he won't leave again.
'This is the last time I won't hurt you anymore'

At the very end of the song when they're both repeating 'This is the last time I'm asking you', notice how Lightbody is raising his voice while he sings which to me, seems like the male is begging with all his might for her to love him again. Meanwhile, Taylor is singing with a low and calm voice which I interpret as her rejecting him for 'The Last Time' because she tells herself that she won't give in to his apologies and seems unfazed by this, when in reality she's completely heartbroken to let him go.

So to those who actually read my interpretation; Thank you :) This really is a beautiful song and I always try to make little back stories for the music I listen to.

General CommentA girl and guy fall in love. She feels like their love isn't the strongest, or the most special, but she loves how she feels safe and loved with that guy. She treats him both like a best friend and a lover, and is truly happy when he's around. He is still in love with someone else, and she knows him well enough to realize it. But he tells her he loves her and means it, and she tries to make herself believe it, and to forget how his heart doesn't entirely belong to her. When they're together, he can only think about her, but whenever he's alone or far from her, he can't stop thinking about the past and notices how he won't be able to give her what she needs, which is to be loved by him, to be the only one on his mind. He often ' leaves ' by pushing her away because of these mixed emotions. He wants to be with her, wants to love her fully because he truly cares for her, but he's never able to forget that other one. Meanwhile, she doesn't understand why he keeps breaking her, but lets him come back each time, in need of him. Both of them recognize how this love is making the other suffer, but they can't let go, because it always seems right when they're together.

And he says it's the last time he'll hurt her, and she says how it's the last time she'll let him...

General CommentAwesome song ~ maybe cuz I totally relate.....he keeps leaving her and coming back expecting her to still be waiting for him.....she keeps hoping this will FINALLY be the time he makes her a priority and takes him back.......

Been there -- and finally learned it doesn't work.....if you aren't a priority from the start, you never will be....some people aren't capable of love that way. It's the classic narcissist/empath love story.....once she doesn't meet his demands or she unveils a part of his mask, he leaves to get his supply elsewhere until that runs dry and then returns to her knowing she'll give it to him cuz she cares and is too blinded by love to see what he's really doing and that he lacks the ability to even feel empathy.....and so the cycle begins again.

Every time she says it's his last chance but inside he knows it never is cuz he's got her under his spell. I lived this story for several years ~ so happy to be FREE and so sad for the woman he's playing this game with now.

General CommentFor this song, Swift wanted to replicate the sounds of the songs Jacknife Lee has produced for the likes of U2 and Snow Patrol. So not only did she recruit the latter band's lead singer, Gary Lightbody, to co-write and duet with her, but she recruited the producer himself to helm the whimsical orchestral ballad.

Gary Lightbody is one of several songwriters that Swift reached out to write with her on Red. She told Billboard magazine that the people she chose to collaborate with were ones who inspired her. "Snow Patrol are so absolutely dead-on," she said, "they can just hit you when they are singing about loss or longing."

Song MeaningI found myself at your door, just like all those times before
But I'm not sure how I got there
All roads, they lead me here

*He doesn't know why he keeps coming back to hurt her*

I imagine you are home, in your room, all alone
And you open your eyes into mine and everything feels better

*He hurts her then he goes back to her and says he is sorry and she believes him*

Right before your eyes I'm breaking
    No past, no reasons why
    Just you and me

*She feels like she is breaking and doesn't know why*

This is the last time I'm asking you this
Put my name at the top of your list
This is the last time I'm asking you why
You break my heart in the blink of an eye, eye, eye

*She is basically saying " stop making me you second choice" she wants to know why she is broken and why he makes her feel this way*

You find yourself at my door, just like all those times before
    You wear your best apology
But I was there to watch you leave

*He always says he is sorry and that he will change but it never happens*

And all the time to let you in, just for you to go again
    Disappear when you come back
    Everything is better

*She forgives him so many times and then she feels better*

And right before your eyes I'm aching
    Run fast, nowhere to hide
    Just you and me

*She feels better when he is back but deep inside she is hurting*

This is the last time you tell me I've got it wrong
This is the last time I say it's been you all along
This is the last time I let you in my door
This is the last time, I won't hurt you anymore, ohh

    * This my favorite part of the song. She is saying this is the last chance you have, and he is saying he is going to change*

This is the last time I'm asking you this (This is the last time I'm asking you this)
Put my name at the top of your list (Put my name at the top of your list)
This is the last time I'm asking you why (This is the last time I'm asking you why)
You break my heart in the blink of an eye (You break my heart)

This is the last time I'm asking you, last time I'm asking you, last time I'm asking you this
This is the last time I'm asking you, last time I'm asking you, last time I'm asking you this
This is the last time I'm asking you, last time I'm asking you, last time I'm asking you this
This is the last time I'm asking you, last time I'm asking you, last time I'm asking you this

    * The last part of the song keeps repeating the same lines which means to me that even though she said this is the last time she gives him so many more chances*

    * This song is such a beautiful song*
