Again tonight I sang a song, a prayer if you will
Fell to the floor on blackened knees, and all the trees fell still
Press my hands between my thighs, and poured the thistle milk
Begged the thunderbolts to strike and mark me as alive

Oh the lilies on the hill
Oh the lilies on the hill
Oh the lilies on the hill
Scented the night

And so I finished up my prayer, rose slowly and I stared
But I was empty as a grave and ghostless was the air
Lay back to bed and dulled my eyes and searched those fruitless skies
Again begged the thunderbolt to strike, to mark me or else I would die

Oh the lilies on the hill
Oh the lilies on the hill
Oh the lilies on the hill
Scented the night

And in the seconds before sleep
And in the seconds before sleep
Did I believe what I did see?
Did I believe what came to me?

Appeared a figure of a man, waving upon the hill
To the window I ran and saw what he had sent
Children of a private world, to be conceived in milk
A hundred marching to my door all bringing dreams to drink

Thank god I'm alive!
Thank god I'm alive!

Oh the lilies on the hill
Oh the lilies on the hill
Oh the lilies on the hill
Scented the night

My InterpretationThis song is about losing inspiration and praying to the universe that you'll find something to live for. When you feel so empty and lost in yourself, you feel like it's do or die, as if something must "hit" you (thunderbolt) for you to wake up and find yourself again.

I think the chorus is referring to nature as her saviour. The scent of the lilies woke her mind up, and she's so happy to be alive.

General CommentI agree with the above poster! I think the nature or lilies or a reminder of how beautiful life can be when you feel empty or feel like dying.

General CommentI recently watched her live stream (can't remember the host anymore). She indeed confirmed that she wrote 'Lilies' after having a writer's block. She watched an old 70s-80s love movie where that woman waits for her lover to return from war. And as he does, she runs up towards him through a field of lilies.
She especially noted the line 'Thank God I'm alive!' to refer to the end of her inspirational drought.

I really thought this song was about masturbation.

Song MeaningNatasha explained it to Qthemusic.com and it was the first song she wrote for the record.

"Every time I write an album, the first track is my favourite in a way. This one especially because the content of the song is a really good manifesto for the rest of the record. It starts out haunted by being lonely or not able to get inspiration, feeling a bit isolated. By the end it moves into this pro-life, elated full-on ending. For me, the album is about letting go of things and resolving something. I think because I wrote it over such a long time - a period of two years - I was almost trying to get away from extremes, trying to be a real person and settle down and find out about those bits in between the drama of feeling really sad and fucked up and really euphoric and happy, because I'd written the last album in that dramatic dark place. I wanted the The Haunted Man to be a bit more eclectic and varied and rich, I suppose."
