Never see the big church steeple when I call you on the phone
Never feel the rush of angels, when we stay up late alone
Never whisper you a great love story, only scream and cry and moan
But you’re a good man, but you’re a good man
I keep telling myself to just let go
Oh, let go of the one who took all your gold

I get home and there’s a love note waiting
But only he is here tonight
And the words, the promises you’re making
Only echo all his lies
And for every sweet nothing you whisper
Why is goodbye my reply?
Cause you’re a good man, cause you’re a good man
I keep telling myself to just let go

There was someone that I knew before
A heart from the past that I cannot forget
I let him take all my gold, and hurt me so bad
But now for you, I have nothing left of all my gold

Escape the past, turn my heart back,
Am I ever gonna let him go, get my gold back?

And today I was a dead girl walking, see the light burn through the tears
Heard you say my name and get to talking of the love and all the fears
And you saw all the pain I was holding, and yet still you’d hold me near
Cause you’re a good man, cause you’re a good man,
I keep telling myself to just let go

There was someone that I knew before,
A heart from the past, that I cannot forget
I let him take all my gold, and hurt me so bad
But now for you, I have nothing left

Cause there was someone that I knew before
A heart from the past, that I cannot forget
I let him take all my gold, and hurt me so bad
But now for you, I have nothing left of all my gold

Song MeaningThis seems to be about how a past relationship affects a new one. She's found a new man, but still wants her old love back. She doesn't picture herself marrying the one she's in a current relationship with or feels the same amount of love. All they do is fight. He leaves her a love note, but she wants the note to be from her former love. All the promises he makes to her remind her of the broken promises and lies the other told her. He is affectionate but she is distant. She keeps reminding herself that he is a good man. She should love him. Finally he confronts her and talks to her about their relationship. He can see how much pain she is in and how she still has something for her past love. And yet he still doesn't rebuff her.

She wants to let go of her former love. She keeps telling herself to let go. Because he took all of her "gold". Now she feels empty and has nothing of value to offer.

General CommentI love this song. It's so beautiful and simple. She hasn't got over someone who broke her heart and the feelings that she still has for him are invading her current relationship. It's left her dry- all her gold went to the man who broke her heart, yet this new man is still there to comfort her, and she has nothing to give him.

My InterpretationMost music anyone falls in love with resonates based on how you can empathize from it. How I interpret these lyrics hits home with what I'm going through right now. What Natasha is really saying can really be a mystery it's all based on perception. But how I apply this song is..The girl is painfully confused. How I see is this is as the her struggling with the "new" him but loving him for all the old reasons. Before all these feelings is the reality that she has been stripped of all her great qualities, her "gold", she lost all her values from all the pain he caused her. And now that she's back with him, he's all grown and changed but she's still this; without her gold. He's everything she's always wanted..he tells her sweet nothings but lies still echo, she can't forget and let go of what he used to be. He understands and sees all the pain he caused her, he holds her close, but what he was before still has her trapped. She's still a victim of that first love, what he first was, and now he's this new fresh everything. He's learned he's grown. But he's not the man she sees herself marrying, what he was only makes her upset, makes her emotional, makes her unreasonable. She's a mess, he made her this mess. But he's a good man, he's a good man. But she just can't let go..she's keeps telling herself to just let go. It would be easier to just let go. For him, for anyone, she has nothing special left. It's irrational for her to love what he was, what he was made her this victim; this new guy that he is, this everything she's always wanted is just someone unfamiliar she doesn't have THAT love for; and she now is this mess because of him. She's insecure, she has no trust...and needs reclaim her values.
