"While He Still Knows Who I Am" as written by and Georgia Middleman Tom Douglas....
Drive a Chevy 'cause he drove Chevys,
Like him I'm a baseball fan
I'm going back to see him
While he still knows
Who I am

Mama says he can't remember
Daddy thinks that he still can
I'm going back to see him
While he still knows
Who I am

This time I'm gonna hug him
Instead of just shaking hands
Gonna tell him that I love him
While he still knows
Who I am

I only knew him as my father,
I'm gonna get to know the man
I'm going back to see him
While he still knows
Who I am

This time I'm gonna kiss him
Instead of just shaking hands
Gonna tell him that I love him
While he still knows
Who I am

I know I can't turn back time
We'll slow it down while we can
I'm going home to see him
While he still knows
Who I am

While he still knows
Who I am

My InterpretationWell I have a deep love for dogs and in a way this can be a metaphor like if a dog were a human and when the dog was on its last leg about to pass away the song title makes a lot of sense. The owner could be grown and is coming back to see his boyhood best friend before he dies. And in the song where it says I only knew him as my father it could be replaced with best friend. I know this is mainly about a son returning to his father who has a mental disease and might in the way of dying but this interpretation is also a good one to look at for all pet owners who lost a best friend in an animal.
