In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Come, take a look inside
What you lost you'll find
What you want is right in front of you
Look, underneath the stairs
What's broken is repaired
Now there's nothing left behind
Nothing left of you
Voices start to change
Faces rearrange
Eyes roll back and hands are pulling you down
They're dragging you beneath
In between your teeth
You'll sleep when the shadow move over your
Black eyes
I hear you calling out for me tonight
No rest for the soon departed
Black eyes
You won't be dreaming when you sleep tonight
I'll finish what you started
Eyes hiding in the hall
Hanging on the wall
Through this broken window
Feeling the cold distance of the moon
In this empty room
Now there's nothing left behind
And it's all because of you
Cover your ears
You don't wanna hear
The whispers in the walls
Are making it clear
You're all by yourself
There is no one else
You'll sleep when the shadow move over your
Black eyes
I hear you calling out for me tonight
No rest for the soon departed
Black eyes
You won't be dreaming when you sleep tonight
I'll finish what you started
Hands cover your eyes
Now that you realize
All the things you love
Were never here
What's lost will be found
Buried underground
You'll sleep when the shadow moves over you
Black eyes
I hear you calling out for me tonight
No rest for the soon departed
Black eyes
You won't be dreaming when you sleep tonight
I'll finish what you started

Hayalperest
Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

Amazing

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

To me, this song is about regrets and life mistakes. (you'll have to forgive me, i'm rubbish at lyric interpretations but this is just my opinion and since no-one has commented and i thought i'd have a go anyway...)
"Come, take a look inside What you've lost you'll find What you want is right in front of you" - its like a friend consoling another, telling him/her that although they have made mistakes they can always change the future.
"Look, underneath the stairs What's broken is repaired Now there's nothing left behind Nothing left of you" - its as if the person was trying to find something better in life and it seemed that for a short while, they felt 'fixed' but long term, the underlying problem has just been ignored or the underlying problem just got worse or led to further problems. So much so that, as a person, they felt consumed until nothing remained of the person before.
"Voices start to change Faces rearrange Eyes roll back and hands are pulling you down They're dragging you beneath Blood between your teeth (?) You'll sleep when the shadow moves over your.." - Perhaps sugesting that their destructive behaviours are metaphorically (or literally with some addictions for instance) killing, haunting or attacking them, especially in their dreams.the last line reminds me of a line in Macbeth "life's but a walking shadow" which means that as humans we all have the same habits, fears and emotions and make the same mistakes, as many other humans that have lived before us.The only way they will learn to live happily is if they put the past behind them.
"Black eyes I hear you calling out for me tonight No rest for the soon departed Black eyes You won't be dreaming when you sleep tonight I'll finish what you started" - The connotation of a black eye/s is that of a dishonored reputation. so the person feels that everyone is criticising them or judging them for their past mistakes. They feel exposed and totally humiliated. The person is consumed by their feelings and needs someone to rely on. They want to have their slate wiped clean so to speak so that they have no regrets when they pass away (or just later on in life). The penultimate line either suggests death or emptiness since everyone dreams at least once a night (we just simply forget them when we wake up). Or it suggest that the person is just going through the motions of life, trying to keep their mind off of whatever they had done wrong. The last line relates back to the line from shakespeare, that we all follow similar life patterns, full of similar mistakes and worries. But once we are dead, none of that really matters. And once we are dead, there is nothing we can do to change our past or future or our decendants' future.
"Eyes hiding in the hall Hanging on the wall Through this broken window Feeling the cold distance of the moon In this empty room Now there's nothing left behind And it's all because of you" - This paragraph highlights the persons paranoia, regret and loneliness. They believe that the choices they have made were selfish and hurt others and they believe no one cares about them anymore because of their mistakes. Their mistakes ruined their reputation.
"Cover your ears You don't wanna hear The whispers in the walls are making it clear You're all by yourself There is no one else You'll sleep when the shadow moves over you" - Their mistakes ultimately lead to their downfall. They will continue to regret for the rest of their lives. They will rest once they pass away (or at least when they let go of their mistakes and learn to live for the future instead of dwelling on the past)
"Hands cover your eyes now that you realize All the things you loved were never here What's lost will be found buried underground You'll sleep when the shadow moves over you" - Their mistakes cause them so much distress and sorrow and sadness, as they realise that what they relied on the most was just an illusion (?perhaps relating to some sort of addiction?) But one day others will hear of their story and that may prevent others from falling into the same trap.
I love this song, and as I've listened to it more and more I've come to think it's a pretty dark song about a drug addict overdosing and the angel of death or the equvalent is coming to claim them.
To me it's about someone who was raped and abused coming back for revenge, years later when they're "repaired"
The rapist thought they loved this person, but the love was never really there and the walls whisper the truth.
It's about the lament configuration from hellraiser. Not joking. It's an item that tempts you to open it then damns you.
I heard this song for the first time a few days ago and I found it to be very dark but in some ways beautiful lol. But, I've been trying to figure out the meaning of the song too. And this is just my personal opinion: I think the song could be about a woman who was abused and in some ways neglected by someone she was in love with in the past. But, the man she was with was either an addict of some kind, or he was possibly schizophrenic. And she eventually escaped from him and moved on. He of course, had a lot of regrets, especially when it came to how he treated her that he wished he could make things right with her again along with all the other regrets from his past he could never let go of, and his misery and stress lead him to his addiction/ strong dissociation from himself. And if he didn't let go then it would in the end destroy him. And karma was taking it's toll on him in so many ways. And it all gets to the point to where he just "Calls out to her" (Calling her) cause' he became that overwhelmed and felt like no one else could help. I also think that the "Black eyes" are supposed to be like a metaphor for the woman's perspective of her lover either having a dark soul or being mysterious or hard to read or being dissociated. Then the "You won't sleep when the shadow moves over you" could either be karma/death/rebirth or the woman eventually giving in and having rough sex with him. I know this may be very different from all the other meanings on here, but that's just my opinion so far lol. But, all the other ones are good as well.
Life is a lot simpler than you're making it out to be. "Take a look inside, what you've lost you'll find." And literally your whole life is about 'searching' for this unattainable je ne sais quoi, to the point that there'd be "nothing left of you" if you realized the truth: that your life is fine the way it is, you don't need that new drug, sexual conquest, or purse.
A lot of life is all about trying to get you to chase these thrills that are meaningless, "hands dragging you down" etc. etc. Demons like Corporate America, Hollywood, etc. etc. And you just get sucked in. But not to worry, because it's nothing new. Every other person experiences the same thing.
I think a lot of the previous interpretations are extremely influenced by the listeners' personal experiences...rape and abuse, mental illness - all a bit too specific for this song.
I love this song! Two interpretations I have are: the logistical and emotional processes during end-of-life, or the murderous conclusion to a long-term abusive relationship.
For end-of-life, it's as if someone (a widower?) is moving out from a house he lives in alone (You're all by yourself / There is no-one else) into hospice, and he's thinking about his life and his regrets. Everything's been moved out of the house (Nothing's left behind / And it's all because of you), and he's left to think (Feeling the cold distance of the moon / In this empty room). Long-needed house repairs are all done as part of moving (What's broken is repaired), and a new family is ready to move in (Voices start to change / Faces rearrange).
But he missed the life he was really wanted to have, and he's calling out to a now-deceased lost love he regrets not living out his life with with (Hands cover your eyes / Now that you realize / All the things you love / Were never here // What's lost will be found / buried underground). The family he had feels wrong (Eyes hiding in the hall / Hanging on the wall / Through this broken window), and he imagines how life could have been (another allusion in Voices start to change / Faces rearrange). And he's asking her forgiveness and hopes that her family and children (perhaps one is his?) will carry in the life he wished he'd had.
The abusive relationship interpretation is far darker and fits the lyrics closely in thr sense of a chronological narrative. The abuser is the song's narrator. The abused ran away after an especially bad episode of abuse that left her with black eyes, but he has lured her back to his/their house under the ruse of reconciliation. He says he's changed and he's what she "really want"s. He shows her that he's "repaired" (erased evidence of) his abusive behavior in part by fixing damage she did when he'd locked her under the staircase as punishment.
Her guard momentarily down, he drops the guise (Voices start to change / Faces rearrange), takes physical control of her even though she struggles, and locks her in a room, perhaps a basement or cellar. Terrified, she tries to escape, but at most breaks out a window and realizes the room is under video surveillance. She screams for help, and realizes no help is coming because no-one else can hear her. He taunts her (perhaps via a speaker in the room), saying her calls for help are calls for him to kill her for her disobedience ("finish" what she started). She breaks down, realizing what's about to happen. She pleads with him to stop, but is murdered as his shadow covers her body.
