"Lion's Den" as written by and Peter Duncan/taylor Liddle....
Night descended like a blanket, on the house
Where I miss you like a limb.
I close the curtains, shun the working and
I put your record on.
I put your record on.

I, the lonely tax collector, never had
Such a feeling before you came.
You descended, I amended
And I need it like a hole in the head.
I need it like a hole in the head.

[Repeat: x2]
You took me to the lion's den
And waited for the beast to begin.

My InterpretationMy interpretation of this song is based off of personal experience, so forgive the gender specific and situation specific nature.

The guy can't concentrate and can't get his work done. He's missing his spouse. He'd never had this kind of feeling before. His rational life up to this point hadn't registered for such a thing. He's working on himself and trying to feel these feelings like he never has before, but it is so hard. He needs it like a hole in the head.

His world has been turned upside down and is making him face the demons in his life. Because feeling these feelings for someone forces him to feel all the other **** that's happened to him before, is happening to him now, etc. It's a lion's den of emotion, most of which is bad, but there is that one shining light that is pulling him through it.

His spouse knows this, and knows how hard it is. He's put her through a lot of hard times (just emotionally...) trying to work through this, but she's sticking with it. Every night she waits for the beast to begin, knowing that it'll come good in the end.

Interestingly this ties in well with the song that made me sign up to an account here - I'll Still Destroy You and Sleep Well Beast by The National mention the "beast" as the dark side the protagonists personality that he wants to destroy and is working to get rid of. This is the same beast in this song.

I guess another interpretation is that it's not his spouse he's missing, but someone he can't have, or someone that he shouldn't have. But that just doesn't feel that right to me.
