So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
This gift will last forever
This gift will never let you down
Some things are made from better stuff
This gift is waiting to be found
Your heart's in wide receiving
Been too long buried in the sand
Some things require leaving
This gift will fall right in your hand
Just try to understand
If you long enough
And you don't give up
If you're strong enough
And you don't give up
And you
You'll be no harbor to the sorrow
Just let it go.
Don't hang your head in sorrow
Don't give up just before you win
Don't wait around for tomorrow
Open up your arms and let it in
This gift will last forever
This gift will never let you down
Some things are made from better stuff
This gift is ready to be found
Just you believe it now
This gift will last forever
This gift will never let you down
Some things are made from better stuff
This gift is ready to be found
Your heart's in wide receiving
Been too long buried in the sand
Some things require believing
These things just fall right in your hand
Just try to understand
If you long enough
And you don't give up
If you're strong enough
And you don't give up [x2]
This gift will never let you down
Some things are made from better stuff
This gift is waiting to be found
Your heart's in wide receiving
Been too long buried in the sand
Some things require leaving
This gift will fall right in your hand
Just try to understand
If you long enough
And you don't give up
If you're strong enough
And you don't give up
And you
You'll be no harbor to the sorrow
Just let it go.
Don't hang your head in sorrow
Don't give up just before you win
Don't wait around for tomorrow
Open up your arms and let it in
This gift will last forever
This gift will never let you down
Some things are made from better stuff
This gift is ready to be found
Just you believe it now
This gift will last forever
This gift will never let you down
Some things are made from better stuff
This gift is ready to be found
Your heart's in wide receiving
Been too long buried in the sand
Some things require believing
These things just fall right in your hand
Just try to understand
If you long enough
And you don't give up
If you're strong enough
And you don't give up [x2]

When I first heard this song I was going through a divorce. My ex was a cheating narcissist. Didn't miss him at all. But having my kids half the week leave me was devastating. I went into a dark dark place. Even quit listening to music. But before that And after it was a song of hope. That you just gotta hold on. Especially the line about sorrow. Just let it go. I kind of thought of God as My gift then and My faith. Then I met my future husband and he was everything I prayed to God I needed. He played the song for me on the jukebox on our first date. The song eventually reminded me of him too. Some things are made of better stuff. WS gonna read the song lyrics to him at our wedding but minister forgot. It will always hold a special place in my heart. It is a song that has moved me so much and helped me through the hardest time of my life.
