Yeah, yo

You were that foundation
Never gonna be another one, no
I followed, so taken
So conditioned, I could never let go
Then sorrow, then sickness
Then the shock when you flip it on me
So hollow, so vicious
So afraid, I couldn't let myself see
That I could never be held
Back or up, no, I'll hold myself
Check the rep, yep, you know mine well
Forget the rest let them know my hell
Damn, I'm back yep, my soul ain't sell
Kept respect up, the best they fell
Let the rest be the tale they tell
That I was there, saying

And these promises broken
Deep below
Each word gets lost in the echo
So one last lie I can see through
This time I finally let you
Go, go, go

Test my will, test my heart
Let me tell you how the odds gonna stack up
Y'all go hard, I go smart
How's that working out for y'all in the back, huh?
I've seen that frustration
Been crossed and lost and told no
And I've come back unshaken
Let down and lived and let go
So you can let it be known
I don't hold back, I hold my own
I can't be mapped, I can't be cloned
I can't C-flat, it ain't my tone
I can't fall back, I came too far
Hold myself up and love my scars
Let the bells ring wherever they are
'Cause I was there saying

In these promises broken
Deep below
Each word gets lost in the echo
So one last lie I can see through
This time I finally let you go

Go
Go
Go
Go
Go

No, you can tell 'em all now
I don't back up, I don't back down
I don't fold up, and I don't bow
I don't roll over, don't know how
I don't care where the enemies are
Can't be stopped, all I know, go hard
Won't forget how I got this far
For every time, saying

And these promises broken
Deep below
Each word gets lost in the echo
So one last lie I can see through
This time I finally let you
(Go) go
(Go) go
(Go) go
(Go) go
(Go) go
(Go) go
(Go) go

    My Interpretation

"You were that foundation Never gonna be another one, no I followed, so taken So conditioned I could never let go Then sorrow, then sickness Then the shock when you flip it on me So hollow, so vicious So afraid I couldn't let myself see That I could never be held Back up, no, I'll hold myself Check the rep, yep you know my rail Forget the rest let them know my hell Damn, I'm back yep, my soul ain't sell, Kept respect up the vets stay there, Let the rest be to tell they tale That I was there saying"

Someone who used to be in a certain position of a company, the bottom of it making very little money. I followed a certain position or specific path and I was set to adapt to a certain position or area that I could never leave it and move on. Then nervousness and sickness and shock when the higher up's blamed it on the lower end(me), but really the customers are to blame for wanting fast food so quickly. I was so afraid of the higher ups or empty within that I couldn't view my own opinion on the cause of how something got so fu**ed up, so the upper people had no choice, but to blame me. My soul isn't for sale, I'm coming back to become myself to take on self-control. "Kept respect up, the vets stay their" that line is kind of confusing, but I believe in my own words it's about the people whom have a lot of experience in the higher ups and they've gained that respect, so they stay up top. "Let the rest be to tell they tale" is pretty much saying they will tell their stories up when they're vets(veterans) or experienced people.

"And these promises broken Deep, feeble Each word gets lost in the echo So one last lie I can see through This time I finally let you Go, go, go"

Promises broken.. maybe it's about holding onto a promise that they will pay off a home, car etc. and strive to work hard, when in reality that promise is broken. The broken promises caused violence. Each word(promise) they say keeps getting lost in the echo(when you speak something the words you speak eventually echo into the distance becoming lost). So one last lie that I can see through. Now I'm finally letting go.. perhaps it's about letting go of plans and just living in the moment. Doing as much as you can today because you might not get tomorrow.

"Test my will, test my heart Let me tell you how the odds gonna stack up Y'all go hard, I go smart How's it working out for y'all in the back, huh? I've seen that frustration Big cross, they're lost but don't know And I've come back unshaken Let down, I've lived and let go So you can let it be known I don't hold back, I hold my own I can't be mad, I can't be calm I can't sing flat, it ain't my tone I can't fall back, I came too far Hold myself up and love my scars Let the bells ring wherever they are 'Cause I was there saying"

Saying if you put a test on me and test my heart. You're going to just get hurt even further.. let me tell you how the odds are gonna stack up. "Let me tell you what's gonna happen." They go hard, but he's gonna go smart. "How's it working out for y'all in the back huh?" I've seen the negative crap that I had to go through. "Big cross, they're lost and don't know.. is saying the people who talk to 'God' or 'Jesus on the cross'. I've come back without shaking anymore(being worried about the higher people). He's been let down and lived and let go, and he doesn't hold anything back anymore he holds his self-control. I can't be mad anymore and I can't be calm. I've gone so far already in life that I can't go back to the negatives again. I'm going to love all the pain that I've been through and I'm going to love the scars(not literally, just saying he's going to love all the things he's known to not do anymore). Pretty much saying this: "I go to heaven when I know what the negatives can do to hurt me or what I fear to not do ever again." "Let the bells ring wherever they're."? I'm not quite sure what that one means..

"No, you can tell 'em all now I don't back up, I don't back down I don't fold up, and I don't bow I don't roll over, don't know how I don't care where the enemies are Can't be stopped, all I know go hard! Won't forget how I got this far And every time, saying"

Now I am telling someone that I don't back up or back down.. I keep moving forward. I don't fold up and I don't bow.. is pretty much saying I don't get cut in half or bow down to anyone anymore. "I don't roll over" I think means to not get rolled up and pushed down or pushed from one place to another. "I don't care where the enemies are.. saying he doesn't care about enemies anymore he's going to not worry about them. He's not going to be stopped by anyone anymore. "All I know is go hard is saying he's going to try his best now." He won't forget the memories anymore. Fear is what builds you up because you don't want to be caught in the "fire".

All in all.. summary: This is about, men learning to rise above the fears that catch up behind them(at least to me). You're only going to grow bigger or stronger if you let fear behind you and you move forward if fear catches up to you. It's the only way you move forward in life.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
