Don't say yes if you can't say no,
Victim of the system, say it isn't so
Squatted on the doorstep, swallowed all the blow
Leaving without you, can't say no

Halfway starts with happiness for me
Halfway house, lost kitten in the street
Hit me where it hurts, I'm coming home to lose
Kitten on the catwalk, high-heeled shoes

No more hot-headed Saturdays,
They got it, they want it, they give it away
Tell me one thing you would never do
I was looking for a hooker when I found you

You've got my eyes, you've got my eyes
You'll never be mine, ah, but you've got my eyes

When you lie, I cover it up
When you hide, I cover it up
When you cry, I cover it up
When you come undone, I cover it up

So pent up, I was coming home to you
Happy in the nighttime, howlin' at the moon
Sippin' on a cocktail, drinking in the loo
There's something about you I hold on to

You've got my eyes, you've got my eyes
You'll never be mine, ah, but you've got my eyes

When you lie, I cover it up
When you hide, I cover it up
When you cry, I cover it up
When you're blind, I cover it up

When you lie, I cover it up
When you hide, I cover it up
When you cry, I cover it up
When you come undone, I cover it up

They got it, they want it, they give it away
They got it, they want it, they give it away
They got it, they want it, they give it away
They got it, they want it, they give it away

They got it, they want it (when you lie)
They give it away (I cover it up)
They got it, they want it (when you hide)
They give it away (I cover it up)
They got it, they want it (when you cry)
They give it away (I cover it up)
They got it, they want it (when you come undone)
They give it away (I cover it up)
Ah, ah, oh, ah, oh, ah, oh, ah

    My Opinion

I am really surprised nobody interpreted the song the way I did, as I thought it was fairly obvious. This isn’t about some dude in love, it’s literally about a prostitute.

Don't say yes if you can't say no [A hooker can’t say no to a customer.] Victim of the system say it isn't so [Reference to the cycle of poverty and the effect of a crappy upbringing and lack of role models] Squatted on the doorstep [She’s unwanted and given up for someone else to deal with] Swallowed all the blow [Drug addiction, cocaine] Leaving without you can't say no [The girl is helpless and alone in the world]

Half way starts with happiness for me [Foster care is supposed to give children a loving environment] Half way house lost kitten in the street [She’s the product of foster care; the comparison to a lost kitten shows how vulnerable she is, especially while on the street] Hit me where it hurts, I'm coming home to lose [The ugliness of her life affects my heart, but when I return home I forget] Kitten on the catwalk, high heeled shoes [Catwalk or sidewalk, describing the typical attire or image of a hooker]

No more hot headed Saturdays [hot headed referring to anger, resistance melting away. Saturday is the busiest day of the week] They got it! They want it! They give it away! [Customers have money, they ‘want it’ and are willing to pay cash] Tell me one thing you would never do [Prostitutes sell their bodies, basically crossing a line, willing to do anything and everything, possibly to fuel a drug addiction] I was looking for a hooker when I found you [Literally, I found a hooker, I found you]

You've got my eyes, you've got my eyes [I’m imagining myself in your situation] You'll never be mine but you've got my eyes [I’m never going to help you, but I feel some guilt because of our similarities]

When you lie I cover it up [I’m just going to ignore your desperation] When you hide I cover it up [I’m looking the other way at your poverty] When you cry I cover it up [I feel bad, I can’t look while you’re crying] When you come undone I cover it up [Ignoring your horrible situation makes me feel better]

I was so pent up, I was coming on to you [A hooker is so lonely she’s seeking company from one of her customers] Happy in the night time howling at the moon [She’s able to ignore her problems for a while, eventually leading to to sex] Sipping on a cocktail, drinking in the loo [Self-medicating with alcohol; customers often buy drinks] There's something about you I hold on to [I can’t get her situation out of my mind, I keep remembering]

You've got my eyes, you've got my eyes [I interpret this as the singer pointing out how almost anybody could have fallen into this life] You'll never be mine but you've got my eyes [Nobody will pay any attention to hookers or their situation]

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
