The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I've got issues, so does everyone
That never stopped you from sleeping with this loaded gun
I'm sorry for everything I have done (everything I have done)
And now you're telling me
that I am the one that won't amount to no good
I'd never die for you, not even if I could
And I am the one that's always misunderstood
I'd never die for you, even if I could
Die for you, you know I never would
Mommy's little monster,
wrapped inside a box
Can't forgive her,
she threw away the fucking key
I'll haunt her
for the rest of her life (for the rest of her life)
You're always telling me
that I am the one that won't amount to no good
I'd never die for you, not even if I could
And I am the one the one that's always misunderstood
I'd never die for you, even if I could
Die for you, you know I never would
You know that I can never forgive you
You wear it out
You break me down (you break me down)
You're always telling me
that I am the one that won't amount to no good
I'd never die for you, not even if I could
And I am the one the one that's always misunderstood
I'd never die for you, even if I could
Die for you, you know I never would
You know, you know I never would
You know, you know I never would
You know, you know I never would

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Head > Heels

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
I really like this song, because it's the only one (I think) which focuses exclusively on the Hulk. Banner's character has a lot of emotion bottled up, enough to spawn hundreds of songs, but he keep most of it to himself. I loved how this song expresses exactly what I imagined he was feeling.
The first stanza pretty much speaks for itself: everybody's walking on eggshells around him, thinking him a monster, and he hates it. Mostly because he considers himself a monster too.
But he's also angry, because he was trying to be good, all this time. And they "dragged him back into the freak show." He's kind of indignant here. You really realize it's about the Hulk with the "even if I could" part, because he can't die.
Next stanza is even angrier. He's resentful at everything, and he feels like he's just trapped inside this little box all the time, and can't let himself out. He knows he's stuck in this forever. At least, that's how I interpreted it. This is the one part I didn't get entirely.
And the "you know I can never forgive you"? I suppose, in a way, he's talking to himself. Or to the Other Guy. The one person Bruce truly hates is himself. At least, this is the most logical answer to me.
But this is just my interpretation, of course. I love this song (one of the best in the soundtrack), and the Avengers is my favorite movie, ever.
to me, outside the relation of the movie it seems like someone who's controlled emotionally from someone else, and it's kinda making him sick cause he couldn't sleep at night with it and want to get out of this kinda feeling and be set free!
This strikes me as more of a Loki song...Just saying...Especially since he was more Frigga's favorite, kinda goes with the whole "Mommy's little monster..." thing...Especially since in Thor 2, she would go visit him in his cell, but wouldn't even entertain the thought of letting him out. Good song.
