"Someone Purer" as written by Stephen Blaine Harrison, William Blaise Benwell Rees, Henry William Cope Harrison, Kapil Trivedi and Kai Christian David Fish....
I was gripped with a bit of fear
Worried the one thing that I loved
Back when I was just a kid
Might now never be enough
That the body I was in
Might belong to someone else
Someone kinder
Someone surer
Someone innocent
Young and beautiful
Someone purer

I was scratching at my skin
Hopin changes would begin
But what laid beneath was blood
Well of course
What the hell was I thinking of
Won't you take me down to the creek
Wash away our sins of sleep
I feel so tired
As though I might
Not wake at all on the other side
That's no way to go

Oh my dear one
Bathe me in your glow
Cut out my lonely heart
And bury it in the snow
Nothing really means nothing
Is the saddest thing I know
So deliver me from sin
And give me rock and roll

Give me rock and roll

And in the morning there'll be hope
And in the morning there'll be light
And if I sleep and dream up a system
A solution
To fend off perils of the night
Come on in, I'll be born again
Born again as someone else
Someone kinder
Someone surer
Someone beautiful
Someone purer

And when I am you'll know
And when I am you'll know

??????
The devil knows my name
Will salvation come
And wash away my pain?
For I was once a kid
With a pure and innocent soul
So deliver me from sin
And give me rock and roll

Give me rock and roll
Give me rock and roll
A pure and innocent soul
And a pure and innocent soul

Give me rock and roll
Give me rock and roll
And a pure and innocent soul
And a pure and innocent soul

My InterpretationI think this song is more about the inadequacies he feels. There seems to be a big issue with him going to sleep. When he sleeps, and has some quiet time to his thoughts, he feels regret (kinder / purer) for things he does, worried about how to handle his problems (surer), and he feels like a "freak" (beautiful), and at times feels so overwhelmed, that he imagines not waking up at all. Because he's griped with all these inner issues, he feels like he's a different person, so much so, that he feels trapped in another person's body, and starts scratching his skin, to see if the real him is lying underneath it all. He kind of resigns himself to all of those things (devil knows my name/ will salvation come / take away my pain) knowing he'll never find his solution (hope / light / system / solution / to fend off perils in the night) and finds his solace in playing and writing rock and roll.

My InterpretationIt sounds like he's considering whether he might be/might have been reincarnated. I think he comes to the conclusion that he is only going to live once so he'd may as well enjoy it. The album seems to be partly pondering what happens after death. Great song, anyway.

My InterpretationI see it as a commentary on western religions, namely, Christianity. He alludes to this theme many times:

    "born again"
"Won't you take me down to the creek - Wash away our sins of sleep" (baptism)
    "deliver me from sin"
    "The devil knows my name"
    "Will salvation come"

These versus stand out to me:

I was scratching at my skin - Hopin changes would begin - But what laid beneath was blood - Well of course - What the hell was I thinking of"

He is saying that he was trying to become purer--trying to be "born again" in the christian sense. What he realized was that he was not an eternal being bud just flesh and blood. Right after this he goes on to say:

"Won't you take me down to the creek - Wash away our sins of sleep - I feel so tired - As though I might - Not wake at all on the other side"

He is saying that this endless effort to be pure is tiring. "Not wake at all on the other side" could either mean he will not be good enough for heaven, or that there is no life after death...though I prefer the latter meaning.

Finally, "deliver me from sin and give me rock and roll" is him saying, he wants to leave this dualistic perspective of sin vs. purity behind and focus on rock and roll. [whatever the hell that means for him :) ]
