"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Piercing words, eyes are red
Watched your taillights in the rain
Empty heart filled with regret
I know we were both to blame
And I'm not sorry that it's over
But for the way we let it end
So I said all I had to say
In letters that I threw away
And you should know, please believe me
I've picked up the phone a thousand times
And tried to dial your number, but it's been so long
It's never easy, it's like tryin' to spin the world the other way
What can I say?
How did it come to this?
I think about you all the time
It's no excuse, but I wish
That I never made you cry
I'm not sorry that it's over
But for the way we let it end
I couldn't find the words to say
And you should know, please believe me
I've picked up the phone a thousand times
And tried to dial your number, but it's been so long
It's never easy, it's like tryin' to spin the world the other way
So what can I say? What can I say?
What can I say? What can I say?
I hate to think all you had of me
(I said all I had to say)
Is a memory I left you, space between what was meant to be
(In letters that I threw away)
And the mess that it turned into
And you should know, please believe me
I've picked up the phone a thousand times
And tried to dial your number, but it's been so long
It's never easy, it's like tryin' to spin the world the other way

Hayalperest
Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
How can this not have comments? This is the best song off the album!
All American Girl is completely right. Best song on the Album. Nice surprise. Self explanatory song.
I completely agree, however there is one thing i don't understand. The bsong says, "i'm not sorry that it's over." If neither one is sorry then why do they have a heart full of regret? If you're glad it's over you think they would be able to move on.
@he4gives it means that when they broke up obviously they were both heart broken, maybe they loved each other. But they know that relationship was not gonna work out in the end and are over the heart break
wow i can totally relate to this song this happened to me with my ex. i broke up with him, he wanted to get back together, but i said no. we gave each other letters, then i wanted to get back together with him, but he said it was too late because he started to like someone else. he's told people that he still thinks about me all the time and we've told each other that we wish things had turned out differently. the whole thing is complicated but i feel exactly like carrie in this song.
I think when it says "I'm not sorry it's over", the line after that is: "But for the way we let it end". They're sad that they let it end badly, and do not wish to leave it that way.
I hate to think all you had of me (I said all I had to say) Is a memory I left you The space between what was meant to be (In letters that I threw away) And the mess that it turned into
Hmmm i dont really understand that part ~>.<~
This song really isn't about wanting to get back together with someone. It's about realizing that what you had was great, but it had to come to an end. And that end, in this song, came too rough. They just wish in the end that it hadn't ended the way it had.
lostdays- In that part, she says she would hate to have left him with just a memory. She hoped they both learned from the experience, and could have stayed friends after. The space between what was meant to be and the mess that it turned into was what actually happened.
I'm not sorry that it's over But for the way we let it end I couldn't find the world to say
Should be: "I couldn't find the words to say"
I can TOTALLY relate!<3
