I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

A lot of their songs are. Also I feel the same as this guy does. Because the devil is a poison, and it isn't us it is the devil that messes up everything. Of course we are human and with error, but the devil knows just how to trick us and make us feel horrible.
This song practically describes the relationship with my ex. But, as already mentioned, it's most likely about his father.
For me this song reminds me of my ex bf. we went out for 10 months and broke up with me on our 10th monthaversary thingy. HE said it was because he was falling out of love with me. But the real truth was that he was just scewing around with my best friend. (who no longer is my best friend). I have just now began to realize its his fault...not mine so I dont care what he says...thus I ignore his lecturing and yelling at me.
For me, this is definitely about my biological father. I can't speak for John or whoever wrote it, but it is exactly how I feel/don't feel about the heck that man has put me through all my life.
