The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

If you all look at youtube, Liam and Gem play a version on an Irish television show and its stripped down to just the guitar and Liam. It sounds tender and an Oasis song from Liams heart. Theres also an interview with Liam and hes friendly!?! Rubbishes the media hyped 'bad boy' balls.
Liam has said it's about Noel. End of story really. Ofc one can tell what it means to oneself and all but if he's said it's about Noel it is about Noel. Not about "her" or whatever.
This is such a sad song. Or at least it's always sounded really sad to me.
We know it's about Noel, but regardless of Liam's intent - before I knew he'd said anything about it - I already pictured it as it being about two brothers. Knowing of his history with Noel, it just sounded really tragic to me.
I'm not saying this applies to Liam and Noel (it most certainly doesn't), but I've also always thought the song sounded rather incestual. "I could be your lover", anyone? I'm not saying this is how he meant it, but it's what it sounds like to me. Like someone who's in love with his brother, but their relationship is too turbulent, and he'll never get what he wants out of it - hence "guess God thinks I'm Abel", because fate seems to want him and his brother to fight forever, and everything about his brother metaphorically kills him.
Of course, Noel had to go and make a crack:

this is a great song i think the first comment by AbramGragh was was the best interpretation. about a relationship with a close freind who he also loves but cos he feels he cnt take it further shows uncertainty over there future with eachother however he loves her so much that the uncertanty will not brake them as that how close nd deep the love is. also shows that it does put strain on thier relationship but they still stay together even wen she could be taken away from another man lyk noone will come between them.

This song is simply amazing. All of the Don't Believe The Truth Album is amazing. Individually the songs are extremely deep and orchestral. Put together, the entire album is a long connected story. "I Guess God Thinks I'm Abel" in particular is at the point in the story where the main character in the story has a friend who he's in love with, but is also a friend so close, so he doesn't want to ruin what they have already. In this song he attempts to win her love and take it to the next plateau. But in the next song "Another Part of the Queue" shows that he isn't very successful. As the story progresses after that, it shows what he eventually does to win the woman of his dreams. It's brilliant because it seems everybody has been in that situation at one time or another.
ive heard from noel and liam in magazines and this song was written by liam about noel, and their relationship. i think its a kind of "lets put things right" song. incidentally, a part of the queue is about living in London and was thought up when Noel was queueing up for a pint of milk.
Finally, they used the mythical analogy of Cain and Able to eachother, and they've used it beautifully. Best part of the song is the last line, "come on home, let’s make it tonight" It comes out of nowhere and lasts only a few seconds. The first time I heard it, I turned it up loud coz the intro sounded so soft. As soon as the final line kicked in, the stereo speakers fell off the table. Amazing!!!
