"Sign Your Name" as written by and Terence Trent D'arby....
Fortunately you have got
Someone who relies on you
We started out as friends
But the thought of you just caves me in
the symptoms are so deep
It is much too late to turn away
We started out as friends

Sign you name
Across my heart
I want you to be my baby
Sign your name
Across my heart
I want you to be my lady

Time I'm sure will bring
Disappointments in so many things
It seems to be the way
When your gambling cards on love you play
I'd rather be in hell with you baby
Than in cool heaven
It seems to be the way

Sign your name
Across my heart
I want you to be my baby
Sign your name
Across my heart
I want you to be my lady

Birds never look into the sun
Before the day is done
But oh the light shines brighter
On a peaceful day
Stranger blue leave us alone
We don't want to deal with you
We'll shed our stains showering
In the room that makes the rain

All alone with you
Makes the butterflies in me arise
Slowly we make love
And the earth rotates
To our dictates
Slowly we make love

Sign your name
Across my heart
I want you to be my baby
Sign your name

    Song Meaning“Fortunately you have got
    Someone who relies on you
    We started out as friends
But the thought of you just caves me in
    the symptoms are so deep
It is much too late to turn away
    We started out as friends”
This guy and his friend have been good close friends for a long time. They are falling in love, and the guy is sweet and flustered by the subtle changes in interaction because he’s had a passionate crush on her for a while, complete with little symptoms of his crush. This guy is a romantic at heart and he loves her.

    “Ooh, Sign your name
    Across my heart
I want you to be my baby
    Sign your name
    Across my heart
I want you to be my lady”
I love you, my lady; Will you be mine?

    “Time I'm sure will bring
    Disappointments in so many things
It seems to be the way
    When you’re gambling cards
    on love you play
I'd rather be in hell with you baby
    Than in cool heaven
It seems to be the way

    Sign your name
    Across my heart
I want you to be my baby
    Sign your name
    Across my heart
I want you to be my lady”
He wants to risk it, he wants to become more than friends. Whatever happens, he’ll be beside her. If there are problems, either with them changing from friends to lovers or life in general, he’ll still be on her side. Alternatively, maybe the lady he loves is having troubles and he wants to be closer to her. He’s devoted.

“Birds never look into the sun
    Before the day is done
But oh the light shines brighter
    On a peaceful day
    Stranger blue leave us alone
We don't want to deal with you
    We'll shed our stains showering
In the room that makes the rain”
It's decided. Putting troubles aside for the night, they shower together and...

    “All alone with you
Makes the butterflies in me arise
    Slowly we make love
    And the earth rotates
    To our dictates
    Slowly we make love

    Sign your name
    Across my heart
I want you to be my baby
    Sign your name

    Across my heeeart”
    ...they become more than friends.

This is basically the only “romantic R&B song” that I’ll ever like. He sings this beautifully. It's the only song I've ever found romantic, and dang is this song ROMANTIC. The mood and story are powerful and the narrator is interesting likable, almost submissive ("all alone with you makes the butterflies arise", "But the thought of you just caves me in, the symptoms are so deep, it is much too late to turn away"). Totally unlike those other black guy sexy songs that are essentially softcore porn thinly veiled by a crappy beat, this song is sweet like a fluffy fanfic.
