The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
I hear "it's safe to say you'll survive" instead of "surprised" because it sort of defeats the intent of the song. Clearly, if the same exact issues and words are being hashed out "over and over and over" every single day, no one is surprised at all.
The intense frustration in his voice really captures the feeling of being "sick and tired" of futile attemts to compromise and not with decisions but more so getting the other party to understand where you are coming from. He is fully aware of what the other person feels and needs but he doesn't care. That is a harrowing thought to have to deal with...at first...until you are no longer angry, but worn out and frustrated to the point of some sort of sick apathy where the pressure is not ever relieved and you feel as though your head will pop or something, yet, without the grief or heartache.
Eventually, these situations become some sort of dialectic monolouge where the points are merely rehearsed nonsense; lies. The things that belong to him are his reasons that are not ever accepted or acknowleded because the other thinks that with enough pressure he will eventually buckle and give him/her what they want.
Considering the way he sings this song, it seems like he is about to go ape-shit and totally tear up the room but I think torn bed sheets are symbolic of the bed they share and when it's the end they are completely separate, even in their own bed.
What leads me to believe that he hasn't left yet is the last refrain;
"You swore I'd regret it Now thanks to you I can't forget it Cost of this constant battle Won't even miss you at all Free from this life that you call..."
Firstly, he says "won't" which indicates he hasn't left yet but is probably ruminating over the uncertainties of future regret. However, the cost of the battle is in knowing that life is short and it is better to have a few regrets (which is understanding in any situation where there are "investments" (not monitarily))and that possibly the biggest regret would be that he may not even miss the other due to "this constant battle." With "Wasting My Time" on this same album, it would be interesting to know his inspiration but I think that anyone who has been through the likes can completely understand! They are a great band!
