If you go down to Hammond
You'll never come back
In my opinion you're
On the wrong track
We'll always love you but
That's not the point

If you go with that fella
Forget about us
As far as I'm concerned
That would be just
Throwing yourself away
Not even trying
Come on, you're
Lying to me

"Well I went down to Hammond
I did as I please
I ain't the only one
Who's got this disease"

Why don't you face the face the facts
You old upstart?
We'll fall

If you go with that fella...

You'd be OK if you'd just
Stay in school
Don't be a

Do your eyes have an answer
To this song of mine?
They say we meet again
On down the line
Where is on down the line?
How far away?
Tell me I'm

If you go down to Hammond
You'll never come back

Song MeaningI love a lot of the Roches songs, and this is one of their most beautiful. But I hate its narrator. She's a stifling and controlling parent. Instead of just advising her daughter to stay in school, not follow the man she's fallen in love with, she tries to manipulate her into staying by cutting her off from the rest of her family.

"We'll always love you but that's not the point"?! If you truly loved her you'd find a way to let her make her own mistakes - which this might not even be - support her, and respect that fact that it's her life. Grr.
