"I'm Scared" as written by and Burton Cummings....
I'm scared, Lord I'm scared, I'm terrified
Never been much on religion
But I sure enough would like to hear the call
Said I'm scared Lordy Lord, I'm shakin', I'm petrified
Never been much on religion
But I sure enough just fell down on my knees

Heard the choir singin'
Something about good will toward men
And even sleepin' in heavenly peace
Stopped by to see Saint Thomas
On a cold and dreary New York afternoon
Something in the air was oh so rare
I don't know what it was
But I know that it's still right there

And I'm scared...

Living in confusion
Searching for truth that I never found
I needed something to really believe
Looked toward the heavens
On a dark and stormy winter afternoon
Something in the air was oh so rare
I'm not really sure what it was
But I know for sure that it's still right there

And I'm scared...

I'm scared, you know I'm shakin'
I'm layin' awake thinkin' about it now
I'm terrified
Never been much on religion
But I sure enough just fell down on my knees

General CommentSeriously? No one? This song is my favourite Burton Cummings song ever.

He said this song was written after he walked into a church in New York during a bad winter storm. And even though he is personally not religious, some force took over his entire being and it scared the shit out of him. He didn't know what it was, and he is not particularly saying it was God himself but whatever it was, he was scared.

He wrote this song while he was still with the Guess Who and when he played it for them they said it was crap. It is something h hasn't fully gotten over to this day.

I love this song for even though I am not religious myself but I am open to having a spiritual experience. I've been scared of the unknown before.

General CommentI honestly think that this song is pure metaphor. My interpretation is of a person relating an epiphany of some kind (not necessarily religious, hence the metaphor of the church, choir, st. thomas) that may not have transformed his life at the time it happened, but the memory of it has been at work continuously since then (don't really know what it was, but I know it's still right there). Ultimately, I think that the main theme of this song speaks to spiritual awakening, healing, and clarity. Sometimes ppl need to have the shit scared out of them before they come to realize what is truly substantial and meaningful for them in their lives.
