"Montreal" as written by and Abel Tesfaye Serge Gainsbourg....

I guess you had no idea that you could have persuaded me
Girl, you coulda had me doing anything you pleased
Girl, you shoulda took your time and thought of what to say to me
'Cause I'm not as hard as you make it seem to be

It could have went so many ways
So many ways it can go
'Cause ain't nobody feels the way that I feel when I’m alone
So if I said that I won't call
The lying comes natural to me
You probably coulda had it all
You could have been that lonely star
If we just went on
If we just went on, oh yeah
If we just went on
If we just went on

Happiness exists when you don't know a thing
So I hope you don't think this song is about you
And only I can know how close you came
But baby I'm a pro at letting go
I love it when they come and go

But it coulda went so many ways
So many ways it can go
'Cause ain't nobody feels the way that I feel when I’m alone
So if I said that I won't call
The lying comes natural to me
You probably coulda had it all
You coulda been that lonely star
If we just went on, ooh
If we just went on, yeah
If we just went on, oh, oh
If we just went on

If we just went on, ooh baby
If we just went on
If we just went on
Oh, yeah, if we just went on, oh yeah

Song MeaningThe lyrics in the background of the song are from France Gall's (or rather Serge Gainsbourgh's) "Laisse Tomber les Filles", a song about a boy breaking a girl's heart and she warns him to "leave the girls alone", unless he wants to suffer her fate.

General CommentIn case anyone wanted to know, the lyrics from "Laisse Tomber les Filles" that Abel used are:

TranslationAccording to my tentative knowledge of French, the parts at the beginning and end seem to say:

    "Never mind those girls
    Never mind those girls
One day it will be you that will be left (x2)

Yes, I cried, but this day
No, I will not cry anymore
No, I will not cry anymore (x2)"

General CommentFor me this is a straight up perhaps slightly bitter / regretful macho take on a breakup, he blames her basically saying if you had played things differently then all would be OK, ignorance is bliss and if they just could of went on...he tells us he is good at cutting women off and moving on however the tone to me sounds definitely this isn't the case and he is hurting or atleast very disappointed, great track!
