Liam: shut the door turn the light off I wanna be with you I wanna feel your love, (he's thinking about his girlfriend and how she's dead and he wants to be with her), I...
Shut the door
Turn the light off
If I wanna be with you
I wanna feel your love
I wanna lay beside you
I cannot hide this
Even though I try

Heart beats harder
Time escapes me
Trembling hands touch skin
It makes this harder
And the tears stream down my face

If we could only have this life for one more day
If we could only turn back time

You know I'll be your life, your voice, your reason to be
My love, my heart is breathing for this
Moment, in time
I'll find the words to say
Before you leave me today

Close the door
Throw the key
Don't wanna be reminded
Don't wanna be seen
Don't wanna be without you
My judgement's clouded
Like tonight's sky

Hands are silent
Voice's numb
Try to scream out, my lungs
It makes this harder
And the tears stream down my face.

If we could only have this life for one more day
If we could only turn back time

You know I'll be your life, your voice, your reason to be
My love, my heart is breathing for this
Moment, in time
I'll find the words to say
Before you leave me today

Flashing lights in my mind
Going back to the time
Playing games in the street
Kicking balls at my feet
There's a numb in my toes
Standing close to the edge
There's a pile of my clothes
At the end of your bed
As I feel myself fall
Make a joke of it all

You know I'll be your life, your voice, your reason to be
My love, my heart is breathing for this
Moment, in time
I'll find the words to say
Before you leave me today

You know I'll be your life, your voice, your reason to be
My love, my heart is breathing for this
Moment, in time
I'll find the words to say
Before you leave me today

My InterpretationThis song is about a boy who loves a girl, but is hesitant to tell her. She went away and now it's too late. He kept telling himself that he would find a way to tell her that he loves her and
that he wants to be with her every moment of every day.

My InterpretationEd Sheeran, the writer of the song, said this song is about a girl dying and her boyfriend committing suicide because he cannot handle living without her.
In the first verse, (Liam's part) it says, 'I wanna be with you, I wanna feel your love, I wanna lay beside you, I cannot I hide this even though I try.' He basically is saying he misses her and he is trying to hide his pain but failing to do so. The chorus is saying that the girl is his life in general, and can't live without her. In Niall's verse, its saying that he's locking himself away in his room from the rest of the world, and thinking everything over. 'My judgement is clouded, like tonight's sky.' is saying that he isn't thinking clearly about the decision he is about to make. Louis' verse probably means that he isn't turning back and going through with suicide. Zayn's verse adds up to the end of the song's plot/story line. He is getting ready to jump and then suddenly his whole life flashes before his eyes, his childhood to him being in the relationship with the girl. In the end, he ends up jumping. (I think Harry's short verse before the chorus is just saying he wishes he could've been there with her before she died.)

My InterpretationTomlinson is right. It isn't about a bad breakup like people have been saying. If you look at the lyrics carefully, you can see the meaning behind them.

    "Shut the door
    Turn the light off"
The first two lines have a kind of finality about them. Almost as if they're saying 'shut the door and turn the light off for the last time'. It's basically the end.

    "I wanna lay beside you"
If she's going to be lying buried in a cemetery, he wants to be right there next to her.

    "I cannot hide this
    Even though I try"

He can't hide his sadness, obviously.

    "Heart beats harder
    Time escapes me
    Trembling hands touch skin
    It makes this harder
And the tears stream down my face"

He's clearly scared to do what he's about to do. The tears could be tears of sadness over his girlfriend or tears of fear of dying.

    "Don't wanna be without you
    My judgement's clouded
    Like tonight's sky"

He's kind of driven crazy by the thought of his girlfriend being gone that he isn't thinking clearly and is not in any state to make decisions.

    "Flashing lights in my mind
    Going back to the time
    Playing games in the street
    Kicking balls with my feet"

You know how they say your life supposedly flashes before your eyes?

"There's a numb in my toes
    Standing close to the edge
There's a pile of my close
At the end of your bed
    As I feel myself fall
Make a joke of it all"

He's about to jump, and one last thought of her and all that is left of her, literally pushes him over the edge.

    "You know I'll be
    Your life, your voice
    Your reason to be
    My love, my heart
    Is breathing for this
    Moment in time
I'll find the words to say
    Before you leave me today"

He will be her everything, because she was obviously his everything. He can't wait for the moment he can tell her everything he wanted to say, to see her again. If he knew she was going to die, he would have said something different to her before she left.

That's just how I interpreted it after re-listening to it from what Ed Sheeran said. I think it's quite sad- it makes me cry :(

Song MeaningIt is about a girl who dies. Her boyfriend becomes so sad, lonely and depressed. He thinks that the only way to heal his pain is to kill himself to be with her. During Niall Horan's part, he says:
    Shut the door
    Throw the key
He means that he locks himself in a room. He goes to the window and prepares himself to jump. In Zayn Malik's part, he talks about as he is falling he sees wonderful memories or moments. He even states:
    Feel myself fall
Make a joke of it all
This is what the song means. Its very sad and no one should ever have to go through this. Its a beautifully written song by Ed Sheeran. Next time you listen to this song, listen really close to the lyrics and reply to me about what you think.

General CommentLike many others, I believe this song is about a girl dying (from an unknown cause, maybe a sickness, cancer?) and then describing how he copes with it. I find the chorus to be just a filler, because if you read the lyrics between the repeated chorus, it really tells a story.
This is my interpretation of it.

The first two paragraphs, in my opinion, are about his lover being in the hospital, in a hospital bed. He just wants to 'shut the door' and 'turn the lights off', and just be with her. Enjoy these moments. The second paragraph, is about him laying down beside her. He starts to realize in his head what is going on. 'Heart beats harder' and 'Time escapes me' shows he is starting to panic a bit, realizing she is leaving.

    Then the chorus interrupts.

Niall's part is next. At this point, I believe the girl has died, and he just 'closes the door' and 'throws the key'. He just walked into his home, as his lover has just passed. His judgement is clouded, as his lover is gone, and he doesn't know what to do with himself.

Next is Louis's part. I picture him just sitting down on his bed, just letting the shock sink in. "Try to scream out my lungs" shows the screams, the horrible sobs of how sad he is that she is gone.

    Then the chorus interrupts again.

Now to Zayn's part. "Flashing lights in my mind, going back to the time." He's flashing back through old memories of everything in his life. The good times, mainly. He's in his and his lover's room at the moment, as he references the 'pile of clothes at the end of your bed'. He's standing on the edge of the window. 'As I feel myself fall, make a joke of it all." This shows how by jumping and comitting suicide, he just made a 'joke' of his whole life. He wasted it.

Then the chorus comes back, once again, more intensely this time to close the song.

This is absolutely beautiful song composed by Sheeran, and I feel that these really cold yes comforting lyrics are really relatable...

My InterpretationOkay first off get some food or a drink and sit down... Got that food?

Ed Sheeran said for a fact it was about a girl dying and a boy comminting suiside because he can't live without her:

So as Ed said, Moments is about a boy who wants to escape the thoughts that the girl he loves has killed herself, the only way he can get over her death is through death himself. The lyrics in the chorus are like a desperate plea from the guy to the girl he loves, wishing he could turn back the time and tell her he would be be her everything so she didn’t have to die: “You know I’ll be your life, Your voice, Your reason to be, My love, my heart, Is breathing for this, Moment in time, I’ll find the words to say, Before you leave me today.*

Then as this boy is so desperate and sad that he has lost the love of his life, he ends his life by jumping off a building, you can see the thoughts and memories that flash before his eyes before he jumps: “Flashing lights in my mind, Goin’ back to the time, Playin’ games in the street, Kickin’ balls with my feet. There’s a numb in my toes, Standing close to the edge, There’s a pile of my clothes, At the end of your bed. As I feel myself fall, Make a joke of it all.*

Song MeaningWell, this song has such powerful meaning, it's a really deep song, it almost made me cry when i heard it.
My interpretation of what i've read in this song wrotte by Ed Sheeran and sang by One Direction, is that a girl died from an unknown cause, and her boyfriend loved her so much, that he commits suicide by letting himself fall out of her bedroom's window.
This is a beautiful song sincerelly.
In my opinion, you only get the real meaning of the song when you read Zayn's part almost at the end, when he says he sings ''Flashing lights in my mind, going back to the time, playing games in the street, kicking balls on my feet.'' it's about getting flashbacks of their moments together, like when people say you are about to die, your life 'flashes infront of your eyes', then when he sings ''There's a numb in my toes, standing close to the edge.'' That's when he's standing on the edge of the window, ready to jump off. ''There's a pile of my clothes at the end of your bed.'' I think that sentence is more like a filler, but that's when you get that he's in her bedroom, finally ''As i let myself fall, make a joke of it all.'' Is when he jumps making a joke of it all maybe because he's life is wasted, or maybe making a joke of the moment because he doesn't care about anything because he's going to see her again.
Well, so that's my conclusion, he can't bear the pain in he's heart about losing her, so he kills himelf.
