Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
It was a close call
Sitting in the back of the room
With a bowl you had owned
But they didn't know
Close in on my black eye
I feel safe at times
Certain emblems
Tell me it's time
Serpents in my mind
Looking for your crimes
Everything changes
I don't want mine to this time
You enjoy sucking on dreams
So I will fall asleep with someone other than you
I had a thought you would take me seriously
And listen on
Serpents in my mind
I am searching for your crimes
Everything changes
In time
You'll stay frozen in time
Collaging girls
Controlling minds
You hold the mirror well
To everybody else
Serpents in my mind
Trying to forgive your crimes
Everyone changes in time
I hope he changes this time
Sitting in the back of the room
With a bowl you had owned
But they didn't know
Close in on my black eye
I feel safe at times
Certain emblems
Tell me it's time
Serpents in my mind
Looking for your crimes
Everything changes
I don't want mine to this time
You enjoy sucking on dreams
So I will fall asleep with someone other than you
I had a thought you would take me seriously
And listen on
Serpents in my mind
I am searching for your crimes
Everything changes
In time
You'll stay frozen in time
Collaging girls
Controlling minds
You hold the mirror well
To everybody else
Serpents in my mind
Trying to forgive your crimes
Everyone changes in time
I hope he changes this time

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
Sharon Van Etten was in an abusive relationship. That was what inspired her album Epic. This song is probably about her coming to terms with her ex, i.e. "serpents in my mind trying to forgive your crimes everyone changes in time i hope he changes this time"
i think it's a 'boy you would own'
and 'sucking on dreams'
my best guess on the last is 'collaging girls' (as if he collects them?)
dark, nightmarish song about an abusive relationship, i think. it grabs me somehow.
'boy you would know'<br /> <br /> the singer has a friend she's seeing, maybe just to listen, maybe something more, but she still isn't sure she wants out of the abusive/manipulative relationship<br /> <br /> ... it's possible to spend too much time thinking about these things, isn't it...
thank you, i appreciate suggestions. <br /> <br /> i think you're right about the boy part. i still hear OWN, rather than KNOW... but you never do know :)<br /> <br /> i really can't tell if she's saying "drinks" or "dreams" now. i heard "drinks." then i read your suggestion, and i was sure it was "dreams"... then i listened to it several more times and i don't know anymore. <br /> <br /> collaging very well may be it (i was going for the same type of idea -- collecting. i think i meant some variation on the word "coalesce," but i might have gone and just made a word up). <br /> <br /> oh... and, no, it's not possible (to spend too much time thinking about these things). i think i'm making that all too apparent.
These are the lyrics straight from the album booklet:
It was a close call Sitting in the back of the room with a bowl you had owned, But they didn't know. Close in on my black eye. I feel safe at times. Certain emblems Tell me it's time
Serpents in my mind Looking for your crimes Everything changes I don't want to mine to this time
You enjoy sucking on dreams so I will fall asleep with someone other than you I had a thought you would take me seriously And listen on
Serpents in my mind I am searching for your crimes Everything changes In time
You'll stay frozen in time Collaging girls, Controlling minds. You hold the mirror well To everybody else
Serpents in my mind Trying to forgive your crimes Everyone changes in time. I hope he changes this time.
For those of you that have the version from the Walking Dead [Serpents (demo) on Spotify or Serpents (basement) on iTunes] The lyrics are different:
It was a close call Sitting in the back of the room with a ball I had thrown at you, But you didn't know. Lookin at my black eye. I feel safe at times. Certain emblems Tell me it's time
Serpents in my mind Looking for your crimes Everything changes I don't want to mine to this time
You enjoy sucking on poison I will belong to someone other than you I had a thought you would take me someday And listen on
Serpents in my mind I am searching for your crimes Everything changes In time
I was lost in my mistake Now I'm looking for my Intentions, Even I've been at the dark, dark sea Better run, Better run
Serpents in my mind Looking for your crimes When everything changes There's no more time Possibly mine. Nights, Days
Walking on my street at night I feel a little safe, a little in fear this time, My hand in clutch, You've got a knife? Well I've got a gun and
Serpents in my mind, Looking for your crimes, Everything changes, Looking for my crimes, Twisting in despair
I think you are mostly right. This is what I hear from the Serpents (Demo) version: <br /> <br /> It was a close call,<br /> Sitting in the back of the room<br /> With a ball I had thrown at you,<br /> And you didn't know.<br /> <br /> Looking at my black eye,<br /> I feel safe at times.<br /> Certain emblems<br /> Tell me it's time;<br /> <br /> Serpents in my mind,<br /> Looking for your crimes;<br /> Everything changes<br /> I don't want mine this time.<br /> <br /> You enjoy sucking on poison;<br /> I will belong to someone other than you.<br /> I had a thought you would take me someday (sounds closer to sundried, or song dried, or sound right... my two cents)<br /> And listen on: <br /> <br /> Serpents in my mind,<br /> I am searching for your crimes;<br /> Everything changes<br /> In time.<br /> <br /> I was lost in my mistake,<br /> Now I'm looking for my attention, (could also be intention)<br /> Even I've been at the dark, dark sea<br /> Better run, better run;<br /> <br /> Serpents in my mind,<br /> Looking for your crimes<br /> When everything changes,<br /> There's no more time;<br /> Possibly mine. Nights, days.<br /> <br /> Walking on my street at night,<br /> I feel a little safe, a little in fear this time,<br /> My hand in crimes,<br /> You've got a knife? Well I've got a gun!<br /> <br /> Serpents in my mind,<br /> Looking for your crimes;<br /> Everything changes, <br /> Looking for my crimes,<br /> Twist in despair (alternatively--twisting despair).<br /> <br /> I was lost In the world,<br /> You wanted me to run; <br /> And I climbed instead, <br /> Searching for the answers<br /> I will never find; <br /> That's okay, <br /> I know what I'm doing this time.<br /> <br /> Serpents in my mind, <br /> Trying to find your crimes;<br /> Everything changes<br /> In time.
"It was a close call Sitting in the back of the room With a bowl you had owned, But they didn't know. Close in on my black eye. I feel safe at times. Certain emblems Tell me it's time" He/She, I'm going to say she because this song is sung by a girl, but it could go either ways. She is in an abusive relationship, she's trying to keep it hidden but it was a close call and somebody almost figured the situation out. Also that she feels kind of stuck in this whole situation, she feels "safe at times" she doesn't really know what to do but it's all she knows. It can be really hard to leave a violent relationship. "Serpents in my mind Looking for your crimes Everything changes I don't want mine to this time" Serpent means a sly or treacherous person, especially one who abuses the trust of a person and tries to exploit you. So by this she is saying she's got untrustworthy thoughts, she's fighting a battle in her own mind over the whole situation. It's difficult for her, she's torn between his manipulation and "serpent" ways but she's also thinking of the things he's done wrong. "You enjoy sucking on dreams So I will fall asleep with someone other than you I had a thought you would take me seriously And listen on" He's sucked the life out of her, made her feel unworthy. She's basically saying she will find somebody better, who'll treat her with respect and love, unlike the antagonist of this song. I also gather she's tried to speak up about it, but he hasn't taken her seriously or taken the time to listen to her words, instead he's just brushed it off and continued his old ways. "You'll stay frozen in time Collagen girls, Controlling minds. You hold the mirror well To everybody else" Everything seems normal to the outside eye, but it's far from. It's all smoke and mirrors, it's fake, like collagen girls. I'm getting the vibe that he's a charming, charismatic man who seems to present himself well to everybody but his woman. "Serpents in my mind Trying to forgive your crimes Everyone changes in time. I hope he changes this time." She's got deceiving thoughts, she's trying to convince herself that he's going to change although deep down she knows he's not but that small light at the end of the never ending tunnel will keep her running and running. She's trying to protect him by saying people change, but in her mind she's hoping he changes. Just throwing my opinion in, thanks all.
@junglejim4332 I like your opinion
definitely not certain with these. suggestions welcome!
This one touches me, so much.
Absolutely an abusive relationship narrative. What grips me is the fact that she can't get all the negative thoughts out of her head (serpents). It seems extremely debilitating.
Her ex seems like a narcissist who constantly judges others but never himself. He also seems like a manipulator ("controlling minds") who has left his effect on the singer even after he is gone.
Coming here after a long whole since anybody posted but I had some thoughts about the meaning of the second part of this song.
"Serpents in my mind I am searching for your crimes Everything changes In time
You'll stay frozen in time Collaging girls Controlling minds You hold the mirror well To everybody else
Serpents in my mind Trying to forgive your crimes Everyone changes in time I hope he changes this time"
I think her ex, who is clearly abusive had met somebody else and she was fretting about him doing the same things to somebody else. I suspect that there was some worry about not maybe taking a complaint forward because he was free to repeat his actions with somebody else.
