I know you can't say the same when I tell you I'm wrong
You say that you don't have regrets
Now I'm taking the blame when we're starting to fall
You make me feel like I don't exist
Don't know why I let you get past me this time
Won't break down these walls

If it hurts to hear at all
I don't feel a thing now that you're gone
I wish I could lie as well as you
But all I have left to say is true
I miss the way we never said goodbye
I miss all of the endless starlit nights
I miss our love and laughter too
But I'm not missing you

And I was playing your game, but I was trying too hard
Felt like I could never resist
And I was buried in shame when you caught me off guard
The very second that I started to slip
Were you my dream for a while
Or just time passing me by

If it hurts to hear at all
I don't feel a thing now that you're gone
I wish I could lie as well as you
But all I have left to say is true
I miss the way we never said goodbye
I miss all of the endless starlit nights
I miss our love and laughter too
But I'm not missing you

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
