In this struggle
Are we dead or alive?
Freedom is not existence
It's why we survive
Shake our grief
Hold on to belief
It can't enslave us forever
There is relief

No change will be permanent
Our strength enduring Bright incandescent
Take a chance before we fall
Backs against the wall

And the sun will rise
Dawn will break through the blackest night
Distant in its glow
This shall pass be still and know

And there's heartache
As we search to connect
Even just for a moment
Pretend We're content
There is love
Know that we are one
We are all in this together
Weather the storm

Look into each other's eyes
Make the connection before it dies
It will all disseminate
As we consummate

And the sun will rise
Dawn will break through the blackest night
Distant in its glow
This shall pass be still and know

Is it hopeless?
Will the fear take control?
Don't succumb to the numbing
Sting of defeat
Take this hate
Let the bile stagnate
Hoist the head of Goliath
Bask in its grace

Stars realign in the sky
Glaciers will melt and the oceans rise
Waves will come crashing ashore
But withstand the roar

And the sun will rise
Dawn will break through the blackest night
Distant in its glow
This shall pass be still and know

    My Interpretation

"Be still and know" is a quote from Jewish and Christian bibles from Psalm 46:10. Phil Demmel has a tattoo of it on his arm, as his grandmother taught it to him when he was young which makes it one of his favorites.

"And the sun will rise, dawn will break from blackest (darkest Jewish version) night." Again from both bibles. God promised his people that he will allow the sun to rise on us every single day - as long as we stay true to Him and His laws.

"Distant in its glow, this shall pass be still and know." - We will all be faced with unbearable tragedy - death of loved ones - creating extreme uncertainty regarding our faith - whatever it may be.

Rob Flynn is an extraordinary intelligent human being, and all very intelligent people have an immense struggle within themselves regarding their faith. They are subjected to constant scrutiny, they are made fun of and mocked by unbelievers, they are made to feel stupid. It would be so much easier to just quit and join the others. It would be so easy to just trash everything that our parents and grandparents spent their entire lives teaching us with hopes that we would remain faithful. Its easy to be evil - you just do it.

On the other hand - its extremely hard to be righteous and remain faithful. Its a constant mental battle. Only an immensely strong person can keep his faith these days.

The song reminds us to stay on the path we were guided to- no matter what the circumstances even the coming of the apocalyspe (glaciers, rising oceans, etc)- and stay true to our beliefs.

Flynn uses his exceptional talent to relay the lesson to all using mostly his own words. And, as it is a song, anyone else can interpret it anyway they like.
