In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I first heard this in The Vampire Diaries.
The way I see it, its about this guy who's still in love with a girl who has left him (maybe she dumped him , or maybe she died). And now there is this new girl who loves him and he loves her too. But he still can't forget his old love. He's still thinking about her and crying for her and getting drunk over her memories. But he also understands the new girl loves him, and he's feeling maybe he's being unfair to the new girl by clinging on to the old one. He's trying to move on.
I could go verse by verse, but I think you get the general idea I'm trying to convey.

Such a beautiful song.<br /> <br /> I agree with that interpretation, except I think they're both still a little apprehensive about this kind of relationship. @Koz@Koz I thought the exact same thing... I think, he really wants to make this relationship work but he's having a hard time not comparing it to his previous lover and getting over her. For example, when he says 'fight my corner', he means he hopes his current lover will understand his defense about being unable to fully let go of his past, and that she'll work with him to move ahead and make what they have work. I love that the song shows how confusing it can be to figure out who you love...
