It's all over gently
The sweetest goodbye
Sweet little peppercorn
I want out of your pie
Hug me, don't slug me
A Mexican Jew
Stay if you want
But don't forget we're through
There's been some soft grass grown between us
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
When they talk about bad blood, they don't mean us, no
It's all over gently
The sweetest goodbye
You sweet little sassafras
I want you out by July
Good when it started
Still pretty good
Stay if you wanna
But I don't think you should
There's been some soft grass grown between us
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
But when they talk about bad blood, they don't mean us, no
Common collegian
High roll
He's the driver
He's got the reigns

General CommentIt wasn't until I went to the Malkmus concert in my town this past week that it occurred to me, as they played this song on stage: it's not just about any breakup--it's got to be about Malkmus's permanent break from Pavement. Sure, it could be interpreted just as a garden variety breakup song, but it just fits so much to be about Malkmus's wanting to stay away from the Pavers--even though they toured reunion in 2010. Maybe my realization is that at the level of "No s**t, Sherlock"--but it honestly didn't even dawn on me till again I was at the concert and it just hit me then. It's a great song at any rate and whatever the meaning.

General Commentit could also be alluding to the departure of his previous drummer..
I think he says "this one's for the drummer in the can" on som radio interview.
