In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
It's a rented car but still it's pretty nice
to sit and hide and tag along
and though it's not my ride and they're not my cigarettes
i dream i live inside that Del Amitri song
And when you said be thankful above all
you're the most ungrateful son
but I've learned enough to look forward to the fall
maybe I'm ungrateful after all
She wish she would have said I love you as a friend
She puts herself to bed thinking now I've scared him off
but it's a bad day's work all this filling voids
and hoping that a man might emerge from the boy
And when you said be thankful above all
you're the most ungrateful son
but I've learned enough to look forward to the fall
maybe I'm ungrateful after all
It's just a rented car
but at least I know my role today
When you said be thankful above all
you're the most ungrateful son
but until my head is mounted on your wall
maybe I'm ungrateful above all
to sit and hide and tag along
and though it's not my ride and they're not my cigarettes
i dream i live inside that Del Amitri song
And when you said be thankful above all
you're the most ungrateful son
but I've learned enough to look forward to the fall
maybe I'm ungrateful after all
She wish she would have said I love you as a friend
She puts herself to bed thinking now I've scared him off
but it's a bad day's work all this filling voids
and hoping that a man might emerge from the boy
And when you said be thankful above all
you're the most ungrateful son
but I've learned enough to look forward to the fall
maybe I'm ungrateful after all
It's just a rented car
but at least I know my role today
When you said be thankful above all
you're the most ungrateful son
but until my head is mounted on your wall
maybe I'm ungrateful above all
