They had my lungs on machines
Their rhythm is pumping air - I'm terrified
But I won't let my hope go
I won't let my heart keep from leaping out
It's leaping out

My InterpretationI personally love this song, im really attached to it. I get lost in thought to this track often. I think it has both somewhat of a literal and metaphorical meaning.
We are all reliant on living life because its the only thing we know. Myself i have been terrified my whole life of dieing. Its not the pain of dieing itself... its venturing into the unknown...
I don't know what to believe in what happens after death, whether we continue on or it is the absolute end. Whatever you believe in, it wont change the fact that you at some point in your life you will be terrified of death. The rhythm of the machine forces him to face the problem of death, people usually wont really know how to feel about it until they are forced to at the last minute. Even so, there is a hope that things will be ok somehow. Its like...your in the middle of a car crash, the car keeps flipping but you hope you will be ok in the aftermath. For that little bit of hope, he wont keep his heart from leaping out he pushes forward into the unknown. As cynical of a person i am, i try to have hope that its not the end, but like the song my fear of death is stuck on repeat until it comes.

You have to face reality sometimes, we tell ourselves comforting things but there are a lot of things that are out of our control. Its what makes life in general unique and special.
