You check the mirror, lock the door
You took the stairs downstairs from the third floor
You thought about her as you walked
Well did the sky open up above you in the dark

And what a note to leave with red ?
Did you know what's coming or even half know it when you left

You set the tempo, set the pace
From the top, from the start, never slightly late
Just that afternoon we talked
Getting out, stepping out, let it out, something got caught

What about the time I heard you say
Were you only joking, or only half joking when you left

[Chorus]
I get the feeling I've done
Something half wrong
It surrounds me, drowns me in it
If I could change it I would
If only I could
You can quote me, hold me to it

We dropped the records at the sea (?)
Writing numbers on our hands (?)
Called the cops, called the car
Call a friend, call a relative still in the dark

? in seconds flat
Call ahead to check in call ahead to ask them where they're at

[Chorus: x3]

You checked the mail and locked the door You took the stairs downstairs from the third floor You thought about her as you walked Well did the sky open up above you in the dark

And what a note to leave with rent Did you know what's coming or even half know it when you left

You set the tempo, set the pace From the top, from the start, never slightly late Just that afternoon we talked Getting out, stepping out, let it out, something got caught

What about the time I heard you say Were you only joking, or only half joking when you left

    Chorus:

I get the feeling I've done Something half wrong It surrounds me and drowns me in it If I could change it I would If only I could You can quote me and hold me to it

We dropped our records at the scene Writing numbers on our hands, gotten that at least Called the cops, called the car Call a friend, call a relative still in the dark

i think its, "writing numbers on our hands, counting out the beats"

holy ghost are primarily djs. after the drop off the records at the venue, they plan their set, they write the beats per minute of songs they want to play on their hands to facilitate easy beat matching. i suppose they could be writing phone numbers on their hands because their phone is out of batteries, but following the "drop the records" line, i think the DJ reference fits better

i also always thought it was "took the bridge and said goodbye", referring to a parting of ways with jerry, who died in brooklyn, and if they were all together in lower manhattan, took the williamsburg bridge to the party where he perished.

"what a note to leave with rent" i thought was "what a note to leave with friends", but i think jerry and the holy ghost guys were roommates, so that makes sense.

easy favorite track on the record.

Jerry Fuchs was a drummer who played with lots of DFA records artists (Holy Ghost!'s label). He died while trying to jump out of a broken elevator. Article here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Fuchs

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
