"Run" as written by and Elena Veronica Tonra....
While I powder my nose
He will powder his gums
And if I try to get close
He is already gone
Don't know where he's going
Don't know where he's been
But he is restless at night
'Cause he has horrible dreams

So we lay in the dark,
We've got nothing to say
Just the beating of hearts,
Like two drums in the grey
I don't know what we're doing
I don't know what we've done
But the fire is coming
So I think we should run

I think we should run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run
Run, run, run

While I put on my shoes
He will button his coat
And we will step outside
Checking that the coast is clear on both sides
'Cause we don't wanna be seen
Oh, this is suicide
But you can't see the ropes

And I won't tell my mother
It's better she don't know
And he won't tell his folks,
'Cause they're already ghosts
And we'll just keep each other,
As safe as we can
Until we reach the border
Until we make our plan

To run, run, run, run
To run, run, run, run
To run, run, run, run

Will you stay with me my love
For another day?
'Cause I don't want to be alone,
When I'm in this state
Will you stay with me my love?
'Til we're old and grey
'Cause I don't wanna be alone
When these bones decay

Run, run, run, run
Oh run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run
Run

General CommentThis is about relationship, of course.
It's an unstable, they don't know is this serious or no. The guy is probably afraid of attachment (If I try to get close, he's already gone). They are a bit offbeat with each other (While I powder my nose, he will powder his gums) and maybe leading a destructive lifestyle (the powder - drugs).

The girl wants the guy to open up and hints that otherwise they'll end up as a disaster (oh this is suicide). The guy continues and doesn't see a problem here (you can't see the ropes)

"They've got nothing to say" - they don't know if they should express love to each other or talk about avoiding attachment. But "Just the beating of hearts..." hints that they feel as if they might be soulmates.

They don't want to tell to their folks, because they don't know what will happen in the future and their scared of making a commitment. The girl is asking if they will stay for another day, but is also hinting that she could love him forever.

They both seem to be in a fragile state so for now they keep together to be stronger until they solve some problems and are brave enough to make some plans.

My InterpretationIt's clear that the song is about a relationship between the main singer and her lover. Some people think that the relationship is not steady, and that the boy's mind is elsewhere. I think so too, but in a different regard.

My interpretation is that the boy has had a traumatic experience, one that still haunts him (But he is restless at night / He has horrible dreams). This experience causes him to be distant at times. The girl doesn't have a full understanding of his past("Don't know where he's been going / Don't know where he's been") and when she tries to either a) understand his past or b) to fix him, he resists ("And if I try to get close / He is already gone"). Also, his parents have already died, and they seem to have passed away before the boy's traumatic episode("And he won't tell his folks / 'Cause they're already ghosts").

The boy's past / depression might cause the boy to be manic at times, have violent outbursts, or have a reality that is separate from the girls'. When she says "Will you stay with me, my love / For another day?" She might be asking him to hang on to reality and not go into his own little world. She could also be begging him not to commit suicide.

I only focused on the relationship element between the two characters in the song, not the "run" repetition. I hope this helped!

General CommentThe first 2 lines should be:

While I powder my nose, he will powder his gums...

it's an obvious reference to coke...

General Comment{ but the fire is coming
    so i think we should run }
i think the fire is talking about the consequences of their actions, and how it's going to come to hit them back in the face or something, so they should run from it.

My InterpretationI honestly think this song is about a relationship haunted by drug abuse from the male party. Allow me to explain:

    "While I powder my nose
    He will powder his gums
And if I try to get close
    He is already gone
    Don't know where he's going
    Don't know where he's been
But he is restless at night
    He has horrible dreams
So we lay in the dark
'Cause we've got nothing to say
Just the beating of hearts like two drums in the grey
    I don't know what we're doing
    I don't know what we've done
    But the fire is coming
So I think we should run"

The powder in his gums is, as others have said, is most likely a reference to cocaine - snorting it, I suppose. And if she tries to get close (not only physically close, but if she tries to care for him and love him) he is already gone, lost in the drug; he is a different person, lost in whatever "wonders" the drugs are doing for him and detaching him from other people - also, drugs can have long-term social alterations in people, making them feel like the don't fit in (another reason he may be "gone"

"Not knowing where he's going is a clear indication, I think, of her uncertainty for the future. She doesn't know if he'll still be around tomorrow, or nevertheless if he;ll still be with her. I can't see any other possible meaning for this - "going", in here, really heavily puts the word "future" into my head when trying to think of the meaning.

Not knowing where he's been suggests that the singer is perhaps worried, or suspicions, of her partner's past. Perhaps she thinks he's cheating? Or something different? I feel there isn't enough detail here to make such a speculation. Her not knowing where he's been may also suggest she doesn't share these drug experiences with him, and he's the only taking them.

Being restless at night and having bad dreams is, from personal experience and a bit of external research, both an effect and a side-effect of drug abuse. They keep him up at night, and when he does sleep it is riddles with bad dreams.

They lay in the dark with "nothing to say", I think, because they have grown so far apart. They don't know how to talk to each other, yet stay awake because they are thinking - worried! - about what's going to happen if they continue as they are.

"I don't know what I'm doing" may be a reference to his drug abuse. When on most substances, you don't actually know what you're doing. Everything is a blur, and time sometimes repeats itself (hence the repetition of this line).

She thinks they should run because there is nothing else they can do. To run away from those problems would put them behind them. She wants him to leave his drugs, and "run" with her (WE should run).

"While I put on my shoes
    He will button his coat
    And we will step outside
Checking that the coast is clear on both sides
We don't want to be seen
    No, this is suicide
*But you can't see the ropes
And I won't tell my mother
    It's better she don't know
And he won't tell his folks
    'Cause they're already ghosts
So we'll just keep each other as safe as we can
    Until we reach the border
    Until we make our plan"

Skipping to the first symbolic line (in my opinion), them not wanting to be seen, suggests that they are ashamed of each other. a Big BIG hint of an unstable relationship. She is ashamed of him for his drug abuse, and he is ashamed of her for.. well, I don't know.

The "suicide" she talks of will be related to his drugs. He abuses them so much that he may well end up killing himself. (Correction here: *) But you can't see the robes, suggests that they may SEEM fine on the outside, but are strained and help apart from each other by mental differences and worries.

She won't tell her mother, because her mother would scold her for being with someone suffering from drug abuse. And he won't tell his folks because they're already dead - presumably because of similar drug problems (going back to it being suicide: here is your reason to believe it will kill the man - it has already killed his family).

So they just keep each other safe "as they can", trying to (I suppose) shield themselves from the reality of the situation. And until the reach a "border" (where they can cross over into the painful reality of their relationship) or a "plan" (some look at the future, and a chance at fixing things), they will keep shielding each other, and avoiding the truth.

"Will you stay with me, my love
    For another day?
'Cause I don't want to be alone
    When I'm in this state
Will you stay with me, my love
    'Till we're old and grey?
I don't want to be alone
    When these bones decay"

The singer here seems to have a fear of dying alone. And even though their relationship is fractured and broken, she still wants to stay with him forever. Also, asking him to stay with her for "another day" and "'till they're old and grey" may be her asking him to stop his drug abuse. If he were to stop, he would be bale to live another day, and even until he's old, and in-turn be with her.

And then the first verse is repeated, emphasising her confusion, irritation, and feeling conveyed at the start.

Ultimately, this sing isn't specifically about drug abuse in relationships, but more-so simply about the dangers of running from problems, flying blind, without any kind of plan or idea of what is going on.

    -Harry.

General CommentLook, I think you all see more in this song than it was actually ment for.
I don't think "he will powder his gums" is a reference to cocaine, actually it doesn't even make sence because of course you can call cocaine powder, but here powder is ment as a verb. I believe it's actually "he will powder his guns". I think the whole song is about a relationship in the Second World War. If you look closely, you can see there are some old-fashioned elements what's likeable for WW2. Also they talk about guns, borders, secrets and dangers of this escape. These words sound also like references to the WW2 and it sounds pretty much like a love that somehow isn't allowed in the war and so they have to escape. And in the end I think she's doubting if the escape is worth it because she asks him if he will stay.

    That's what I think, lol

General Commenti think that this song is about a relationship but its not the main topic, the guy seems to have a bad past that makes him revive some memories and have horrible dreams, he lost himself after that incident .The girl doesn't know what to do to make him feel better but she knows exactly what he is going through without communicating with him, just by laying in the dark in silence. The couple is pressured by society they feel something bad is coming for them so they are looking for an escape from this cruel world, run away together. The expression 'run' might be literal or figurative, however what we are sure about is that they will leave their lives hanging in their past and build new ones or maybe not, they are running away from something , they dont know where they are going but they feel the flames coming their way its for you to imagine how they will RUN...

I think we should run, run, run, run
    run, run , run, run
    run, run , run, run

While I put on my shoes, he will button his coat
And we will step outside, checking that the coast is clear
On both sides, we don’t want to be seen, no this is suicide
But you can’t see the ropes

General CommentI thought this could be about cocaine too... they are restless, can't sleep and the best thing she can come up with is to start running and not stop. She doesn't want to be alone in this state. Paranoia? Not sure what the fire refers to though.

My InterpretationI agree with the cocaine theory. However for a different reason.

The man displays a troubled past through the use of cocaine, nightmares and as suggested by him being "already gone" shying away from her or changing the subject when she tries to become closer to him in their relationship. When he avoids her being closer its as if he is afraid to let her too close to him because he doesn't want her to see or know something.

Her not knowing where he has been is her not knowing his past or what may be causing this behavior in him. (Crime or actions he cant take back)

Laying in the dark with nothing to say is him still not opening up to her.

Her not knowing what they are doing is her worrying for their future and not knowing what they have done may refer to consequential actions they committed together and her in a state of denial that they had done it.
But the fire is the consequences from both their actions as a couple and his past so they are on the run from it. (Running from the law)

They check to make sure the coast is clear before leaving is possibly another hint they are on the run from the law. That's why they don't want to be seen. She thinks that this whole situation is like suicide because they are sacrificing their lives to either guilt or the confinement of prison. Not being able to see the ropes tell us its not suicide of the body. Its suicide of the mind or spirit.

Him not being able to tell his parents because they are dead may hint to us that he killed them (his tragic past or maybe the crime they committed together).

They keep each other as safe as they can because they do love each other and are loyal. Until they reach the border of the country because there they wont have to protect one another from the law once they cross it. The plan is a plan of escape from the law or country.

She wants him to stay with her while she is in her state of fear or guilt so she doesn't have to face it alone. And she wants to be with him till the end of their lives. These bones decaying again suggests they have committed some form of crime (most probably murder. The bones being the ones of their victim(s)). It takes a long time for bones to decay so this again suggests she wants to be with him for the rest of her life.

That's how I see it. But then again, maybe I just watch too much Criminal Minds...
