"The Last Dance" as written by Sharon Den Adel, Robert Westerholt and Martinus J. E. Martijn Spierenburg....
She sang for you last night
She heard you were calling
Yearning in tears a thousand times

Your spirit was floating,
Your spirit was searching
On a cloud of dreams

A moon beam shines bright in the city of angels
Guiding the dreamers back to life
And they'll do the same every tomorrow
Till the pain subsides

Don't be scared now
Close your eyes
She holds guard tonight
Go on forward no remorse
Life will take it's course

She danced with you last night so you will remember
All you have shared, a lifetime
The angels were watching and death will be waiting
Until the time is right

Don't be scared now
Close your eyes
She holds guard tonight
Go on forward no remorse
And life will take it's course

Hold on to memories
See what lies ahead
Life will go on
And we are one
With every step you take

General CommentI have considered joining Songmeanings so many times, but I just couldn't resist when it came to this song! I think it is absolutely beautiful; almost hauntingly so. I think it sounds like the older music Within Temptation have done. I love the tune of songs; but also knowing their meaning. I'm not sure I know for this one, but I'll give it a go in the hope that it will start comments off :)

I think it is about a female who has died and left her male partner behind. She has gone to heaven, and sings to him, as angels would.

"She sang for you last night
    She heard you were calling"

She heard his call, as she can hear him in the existence she has gone to; but he is on the Earth and cannot hear her.

    "Your spirit was floating,
    Your spirit was searching
    On a cloud of dreams"

I believe he is lost, he's looking for her and maybe has given up on life without her. He misses her so much and yet, as an angel she is "Guiding the dreamers back to life" and looking out for him "Till the pain subsides" and he is able to move on or carry on with life.

    "Don't be scared now
    Close your eyes
    She holds guard tonight
    Go on forward no remorse
    Life will take it's course"

This chorus is, to me, her reassuring him not to worry or feel bad that he couldn't save her or that she is gone. That he has to keep going and not be afraid of a life without her and that life will resolve itself and "take it's course" and for him not to worry.

"She danced with you last night so you will remember
All you have shared, a lifetime
The angels were watching and death will be waiting
    Until the time is right"

I feel this again supports the idea of her coming to him; dancing in his memory even if he doesn't know she is there. She urges him to remember the good memories and not to give up - to let them keep him strong. I think the "death will be waiting" is again to tell him not to give up on life - that it wouldn't solve anything him dying too and that he has to trust in the way things will work out. She wants him to remember her and let that keep him strong; and not let him despair.

    "Hold on to memories
    See what lies ahead
    Life will go on
    And we are one
    With every step you take"

I feel the final verse supports this as well. That we must keep the memories of those we love; and not let our loss (even though heartbreaking) blind us from any joy. To know that we're all united; we will all die and in that she is with him now in spirit, but they will be together again no matter what. She wants him to know she'll be with him if she lives in his memory.

I'm not religious, but I believe this still works even if you don't believe in heaven. For example, (sorry if this is depressing) but we will all die and go to somewhere else that we know not of; in this way, no matter what, we are kind of one. But yeah, that's my two cents ^^ Any opinions? I'm really worried I'm interpreting it completely differently to everyone else :P

And just to say it one more time: this is a very beautiful song! <3
