I see you there in your satin shirt / Unfocussed eyes on the ceiling
Fluorescent lips on a painted face / I think I know what you're feeling
This tightrope just begins to feel like home
When the wind comes rising from a distant storm
And all I know is that tonight I might / let go the line, let go the line
Unwrap yourself for a starving man / Come drown your thoughts if they bite you
Turn off the world if it makes you hurt / I'm just a clown but I like you
I see you there in your satin shirt / Unfocussed eyes on the ceiling
A trace of smile on a frozen face / I think you know what you're stealing
Life has been likened to a poker deal
Or a poor brief candle or a karmic wheel
And all I know is that tonight I might / let go the line, let go the line

General CommentI have loved this song since I was a kid. I have only recently began looking at the possible meanings of the lyrics of some of these songs, why I was attracted to them before I could ever have known. To me, this sounds like the experience of someone who is in a shitty marriage perhaps, and goes for a drink and looks at the girl in the satin shirt and connects with her in an at first anyway unspoken way. They both feel the same and they know it. The guy is thinking he may "fuck it, let go the line, meaning approach this woman and of course the possibility of the sexual encounter is implicit. What I like today is that it mimics my own life experience, and the feeling that the connection is more than just physical, it is a connection between two people hurting in much the same way. My two cents.

My InterpretationIt could be waxing lyrical about an unsure even uncomfortable first date or a very sure 'appointment' with a call girl! Dubois' lyrics have always fascinated me and 35 years after first discovering Max Webster, sites like this simply make you want to think again and again about them. Everything is magico!
