"The Shield and the Sword" as written by and Fraser T. Smith Clare Maguire....
You and I
Felt so good to begin with didn’t we?
Well now it seems there’s far too many adverts in between
And we don’t speak
So we’re left in constant silence
It’s haunting me
So I’m ready now to fight this

You have the shield
I’ll take the sword
I no longer love you
No longer love you
I’m not afraid of danger in the dark
I no longer love you
No longer love you

You and I aren’t working
Burning on the bridges now
We’re trapped inside
Screaming won’t somebody get me out

You have the shield
I’ll take the sword
I no longer love you
No longer love you
I’m not afraid of danger in the dark
I no longer love you
No longer love you

I no longer love you
No longer love you
No longer love you
No longer love you

And we don’t speak
So we’re left in constant silence
And it’s haunting me
So I’m ready now to fight this

You have the shield
I’ll take the sword
I no longer love you
No longer love you
I’m not afraid of danger in the dark
I no longer love you
No longer love you
[x2]

You and I
Felt so good to begin with didn’t we?
But now it seems these shields and swords are haunting me

General CommentYep this is one of my favourites on the album. The video is a little too Lady Gaga for my liking, although the costumes are really good. I would have liked it if the video was more about the themes in this song.

Anyway about the song meaning, it's very self-explanatory, it's about falling out of love with your partner. "adverts in between" could suggest it's more specific, and that it's about someone who works in TV a lot and so does not spend enough time with the narrator any more.

But yeah I love the imagery that comes with this song; the idea that the couple breaking up is a shield and a sword is a good idea. Clare's got some skill, although most of the songs on Light After Dark can be too vague lyrically, this shows she's a promising artist, and musically, I love the album. The songs are full on alternative pop, and her voice is unyielding yet beautiful.

General CommentI'm in love with this song, reminds me of 'Rolling in the Deep'. Not a fan of the video, though. It could be an allusion to songs like their 'Teenage Dream' or 'Bad Romance' where the relationship was pretty much doomed from the start, but that might be stretching it.

The lyrics are pretty clear, though. 'Now it seems there's far too many adverts in between': the good times are becoming fewer and further between. 'You have the shield, I'll take the sword': the imagery of the sword and shield being broken apart is nice, but who gets what is important. She needs the sword to 'stab' him by telling him she doesn't love him, but she wants him to have the shield so he can fend off the blow; she wants to avoid hurting him as much as possible.

General Commenti don't think the song is a parody of Katy Perry or Lady GaGa. i also don't think the video is either. in fact i think she said that video was supposed to be "burlesque and glamour".
