There's comfort in the bottom of a swimming pool
I'm holding my breath for you
There's no doubt in my mind that if you could then you would try
To crack my ribcage open and pull my heart right through

There's comfort in the bottom of a swimming pool
I'm holding my breath for you
There's no doubt in my mind that if you could then you would try
To crack my ribcage open and pull my heart right through

But I'm a creature of a culture that I create
I'm the last one on the dance floor
As the chandelier gives way
And I am permanently
Preoccupied with your past
I've been around long enough now
To know that the good things never last
They never last.

There's comfort in the silence of a living room
The TV is on for you
Hide in your basement while your house burns down
Your teeth are loose inside of your gums
They will eventually fall out
Follow an orange extension cord under a carpet, to a closet door
Feeding the black light that will someday make me very, very, very, very, very rich.

But I'm a creature of a culture that I create
And I'm the last one on the dance floor
As the chandelier gives way
And I am permanently
Preoccupied with your past
I've been around long enough now
To know that the good things never last
They never last.

How low is your self esteem
And how low could it possibly be?
I know, I know you're in love with me
And I've been ignoring you

I will stop cutting my pants into shorts
I will address the issues I cannot ignore
And I will do the things I think you might like
And I will be alone probably the rest of my life.

My InterpretationIt seems as if Brian(artist) is a little sad about a breakup. He keeps thinking back and wishes he was still with this girl, but this girl broke his heart. She's "cracking his rib cage open" to get to the heart. Meanwhile he is just lying at the bottom of a metaphorical pool.

"I will stop cutting my pants into shorts
I will address the issues I cannot ignore
And I will do the things I think you might like"

Now he is willing to do anything to get back with this girl, whatever she says.

"And I will be alone probably the rest of my life."

In the end, though, he knows that she probably won't come back, and he will never find another girl.

Grat song, by a great band, though!

My InterpretationIt's about the first girl he fell in love with during his past of not fitting in well with society.
-"There's comfort in the bottom of a swimming pool" can mean he's comfortable with his current setup of unlasting solitude.

-"I'm holding my breath for you
There's no doubt in my mind that if you could then you would try
To crack my ribcage open and pull my heart right through"
He's in love with her, and he knows she loves him back, but he wanted her to initiate because of how he's already comfortable with the way he lives in utter independence, but she was too nervous herself.

-"But I'm a creature of a culture that I create", with his everlasting peace of thoughts to himself, he's developed his own sense of perspective, not completely understanding social norms because of his lack of communication.

-"I'm the last one on the dance floor
    As the chandelier gives way"
means that he's running out of people in his overall life, his departure from society is starting to respond and it's collapsing on himself and is starting to effect even his family.

-"There's comfort in the silence of a living room
The TV is on for you" while he enjoys the silence that comes with his life choice, he has the TV on to support his oncoming feeling of lonesome

-"Hide in your basement while your house burns down
Your teeth are loose inside of your gums
    They will eventually fall out"
While he's living his own life, inconsiderately, his could've been girlfriend is going through her own struggle of thinking about him, but she'll eventually grow tiresome.

-"How low is your self esteem
And how low could it possibly be?
I know, I know you're in love with me
    And I've been ignoring you"
This part is actually applied to both people, the first part was: her trying to get him, but she wasn't up to his expectations because of how nervous she was ("How low is your self esteem" fits here) and how he was already enjoying his life and so she was ignored. After, he starts to grow lonesome while she's already tired of him and tries to start talking with her again, she responds back with "How low is your self esteem?" because in the end, he wasn't independent and needed her after all, he just didn't have the nerve himself, and ignored him.

-"I will stop cutting my pants into shorts
I will address the issues I cannot ignore
And I will do the things I think you might like
And I will be alone probably the rest of my life."
he's saying I will keep my pants and try to mature from here on, and the issues being how his obsession with solitude has gotten in the way of his personal life.

-"and I will do the things I think you might like" he felt that he had so much in common with her that she would've enjoyed everything he plans to do on his own, but he'll never find out if she likes them, and he will be alone for the rest of his life, never to be the same man after missing that one and only opportunity, forever.

Song MeaningI think that a lot of this song is a reference to The Great Gatsby. Everything from the swimming pool, to the crashing chandelier, to the obsession with the girl's past. Although the song is clearly not only about Gatsby, Brian seems to be drawing some heavy parallels.

My InterpretationThis is about growing up, best friends, and about trying to fit into society's norms while exploring the meaning of friendship when one of the people involved considers the relationship stronger than friendship. The regret is the good times spent and how friends drift apart as time goes on. Priorities change and we often forget that our friends (real friends) will always be there while romantic flings come and go. It is from the perspective of the friend too afraid to express his true feelings for the other while he watches them drift apart. Or I'm wrong...either way, I think it has more to do with friendship than a relationship.
