Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
This song is the pinnacle of the message in this album.
The entire span of the album, each song has a repeating rhythmic/harmonic figure that is consistent throughout the song, but evolves over time. This idea of repetition is "haunting" in itself, and relates to the idea of experiences and thoughts. What is "lost and sold" are the pieces of ourselves we have forgotten or chosen to forget, the "pitiful" our regrets, and the "impossible" our personal limits that define us.
Even though we dislike characteristics or events in our lives, everything that happens to us becomes apart of us, and as we evaluate ourselves and reflect on our lives, we realize that the things we want to expel or to give up make us who we are. How then can we possibly "give up the ghost", or move on from these thoughts and experiences we'd rather forget, when they become apart of who we are?
It is the ultimate irony and truth: we dwell on things and "have our fill" in order to move on, and although we are the same person we were when we endured these events, we have evolved through our experiences and reflections.
Exactly my thoughts, just couldn't put it into words! Hit the nail on the head I think.
I came to the same notions. This entire album seems to feel like Thom reconciliating with himself or something about himself.
fyi that repetition is from thom's obsession with the minimal techno of early 90s Warp artists and jonny's influence of especially steve reich and other minimalist composers. though your idea makes it seem way more romantic ha.

the best example of them ripping off minimalist composers can be found on Convergence from Bodysong (Steve Reich- Drumming) and the 2006 version of Arpeggi performed at the ether festival (Terry Riley- A Rainbow in Curved Air). check it on youtube.
I agree with matchboxmatt . I like this member's comment. This song hits me personally. I am trying to 'move on' in failed relationship with a boyfriend that has a drug addiction. I particularly like your comment ' It is the ultimate irony and truth: we dwell on things and "have our fill" in order to move on, and although we are the same person we were when we endured these events, we have evolved through our experiences and reflections.'. I could really identify with what you said.
My ex bf may have chose drugs over me but I am left with my feelings for him and the hopes I had for a happier future with him. I am trying to let go but I think it may have been a mistake to add him to my facebook. Every time I read an update that he is moving on, it is like having my heart pulled out of me. I grieve, play some Radiohead and can;t sleep..lol. In the end, I am only torturing myself but listening to Radiohead makes the time go by easier, Thanks matchboxmatt for your insight.
Thank you so much; I knew there was something more that this Song wanted to express to me, but I couln't find it.
The funny thing about the ending of the song and the conclusion of your Interpretation is that giving up the ghost could mean 1) move on, evolve despite everything we've been through like you said or 2) just litterally give up the ghost - die. Not standing the thought of being that incomplete and not being able to overlook and forget.

Just wanted to add this because it makes the song so much more open and free.
@matchboxmatt This is a beautiful answer. Thank you.
