"Hang You Up" as written by William Ryan Key, Ryan Michael Mendez, Sean T. O'donnell, Longineu Warren Iii Parsons and Sean Michael Wellman-mackin....
I can not hold this anymore
My hands are tired of only waiting to let go
And I am waiting, still

I used to know which way to turn
You were a light inside a tunnel in my head
I try to follow, still
I try to follow, still

It's hard to see you, we are older now
And when I find you, you just turn around
This is a black and white of you I've found
I hang you up and then I pull you down
I hang you up and then I pull you down

No more apologies from me
My arms are tired of picking up what I put down
You're all I think of, still

I'm gonna miss you everyday
I turn my back on anyone who won't believe
And it gets lonely, still
It gets lonely, still

It's hard to see you, we are older now
And when I find you, you just turn around
This is a black and white of you I've found
I hang you up and then I pull you down

I hang you up and then I pull you down

I get lost sometimes
Another year flies by
But I know if I try
Memories of the light in your eyes
Can take me back in time

It's hard to see you, we are older now
And when I find you, you just turn around
This is a black and white of you I found
I hang you up and then I pull you down
It's hard to see you we are older now (we are older now)
And when I find you, you just turn around (you turn around)
This is a black and white of you I found (you I found)
I hang you up and then I pull you down
(Pull you down)
I hang you up and then I pull you down
(Pull you down)
I hang you up and then I pull you down
(Pull you down)

I don't hear music anymore
My ears are tired of all the pictures in the words
'Cause you are in them, still

Song MeaningAbout looking at a picture of someone you miss that was close to you (probably an ex, someone he had feelings for, or something along that line)

    "I cannot hold this anymore
My hands are tired of only waiting to let go"

He's holding the picture in his hands and can't stop looking at it

    "And I am waiting still
I used to know which way to turn
You were the light inside a tunnel in my head
    I try to follow still
    I try to follow still"

Indicates that whoever in the picture was important to him

    "It's hard to see you
    We are older now
And when I find you, you just turn around"

Whoever was in the picture is long gone and the memories are from such a long time ago, that both people have grown to be completely different people. He's not even sure if the other person feels the same.

"This is a black and white of you I found
I hang you up and then I pull you down
I hang you up and then I pull you down"

A picture thats black and white - noting its old age. He hangs it up for the good memories, but takes it down because whatever it is brings too much pain.

    "No more apologies from me
My arms are tired of picking up what I put down
You're all I think of still
I'm gonna miss you every day
I turn my back on anyone who won't believe
    And it gets lonely still
    It gets lonely still"

    "I get lost sometimes
    Another year flies by
But I know if I try
Memories of the light in your eyes
Can take me back in time"

He has no regrets, but still wants to go back to the old days.

    "I don't hear music anymore
My ears are tired of all the pictures in the words
'Cause you are in them still"

Mere words bring back memories and pictures in his head of the past and they never escape his mind.

General CommentI think this song is about an ex who you were always optimistic about working things out with and always had an idea you were going to get back together with, but now coming to the realization that is might never happen, and that it was just an idea in your head that helped you cope with everything despite how much time passed since you broke up or saw each other. although no matter what...he still believes one day they can be together

I think the first verse is saying hes finally realizing he NEEDS to let go because hes sick of waiting for something that wont happen, and he cant keep fooling himself...despite realizing the truth of the matter..hes still chasing after her

    "I cannot hold this anymore
My hands are tired of only waiting to let go
    And I am waiting still
I used to know which way to turn
You were the light inside a tunnel in my head
    I try to follow still
    I try to follow still"

After a long time of not seeing the girl, he saw her and shes changed and isnt the same as she was last time. He tries remembering her by their old picture together, but takes it down cause it causes too much pain

    "It's hard to see you
    We are older now
And when I find you, you just turn around
This is a black and white of you I found
I hang you up and then I pull you down
I hang you up and then I pull you down"

He cant keep apologizing for the past if she keeps turning him down and doesnt want to hear it..but just because hes not trying anymore doesnt mean he doesnt care. Everyones telling him to just leave it alone and that hes never going to get her back, but he shoots down their pessimism and keeps naively chasing after this girl. He'd rather be lonely and miss her every day than give up hope

    "No more apologies from me
My arms are tired of picking up what I put down
You're all I think of still
I'm gonna miss you every day
I turn my back on anyone who won't believe
    And it gets lonely still
    It gets lonely still"

    It's hard to see you
    We are older now
And when I find you, you just turn around
This is a black and white of you I found
I hang you up and then I pull you down
I hang you up and then I pull you down

He forgets how much time has passed since all his feelings for her are still going strong, and looking at their pictures brings back all of their memories together

    "I get lost sometimes
    Another year flies by
But I know if I try
Memories of the light in your eyes
Can take me back in time"

    It's hard to see you
    We are older now
And when I find you, you just turn around
This is a black and white of you I found
I hang you up and then I pull you down
I hang you up and then I pull you down

    It's hard to see you
    We are older now
    (We are older now)
And when I find you, you just turn around
    (Turn around)
This is a black and white of you I found
    (You I found)
I hang you up and then I pull you down
    (Pull you down)
I hang you up and then I pull you down
    (Pull you down)
I hang you up and then I pull you down

Basically that every song he hears just reminds him of her, and when he hears them, he just visualizes her and all of their memories

    "I don't hear music anymore
My ears are tired of all the pictures in the words
'Cause you are in them still "

Song MeaningI can agree with most of what is said, but I don't believe he is looking at a picture.

"This is a black and white of you I found" To me, this sounds more like an analogy to me. Basically like he is saying a memory he is having of an old time, or a "black and white" moment in the past. Maybe before things changed between them and when things were at their best. I'm sure anyone can relate to that, and you are thinking of your own situation like this.

Basically a song about kind of holding on to someone you deeply care for, and not knowing if it's time to fix things, or as he alludes to in the song, move on because you cant hold on anymore. This situation is described perfectly here.

    "I'm gonna miss you everyday
I turn my back on anyone who won't believe
    And it gets lonely, still
    It gets lonely, still"
This is where you get the feeling he wont listen to anyone who says bad things about the situation or the person. It has to be hard to stick up for someone who must be hurting you, but if the feelings are true, you unknowingly do it.

"I hang you up and then I pull you down" to me sounds like a reference to being unable to move on. As in by hanging you up, he is giving up, or like the saying in sports: "hanging up the cleats" for people who retire. But then he "pulls you down" or falls right back into feelings for the girl. Again, everyone has and does feel this. Some people can really make you want to give up, but you still hold on.

And the most amazing line I think I've heard from Yellowcard:
    "I don't hear music anymore
My ears are tired of all the pictures in the words
Cause you are in them, still."

Such beautiful lyrics that really makes perfect sense. Relating feelings to music is a source of healing and here, he is saying he doesn't hear music but rather memories that get stirred up, and he gets caught up in the memories he sees that are produced by the lyrics in the song. Because he isn't going to "hang you up", because he is enamored even through the pain. The power of words are amazing, and this is an example of stirring powerful feelings from such well-put lyrics.

    Just a poor mans thoughts.

General CommentDoes anyone else get panic attacks when reading these lyrics? Truthfully, I just don't want to feel alone. The themes this song is dealing with are pretty much my worst nightmares in life. One of the most tragic kinds of losses...

General CommentBeautiful song. Awesome interpretations. I like the line that eludes to another year flying by. It is amazing how time flies. All you hear is time heals all wounds, which is true, but there are moments where you say "Wow a year has passed." Although the pain is subdued, the love is still there and hope. Just my thoughts on that line and song.

General CommentLol I can't do any better than the song analysis above but I agree. He's basically looking at a picture of someone he loved and thinking about the past memories and etc.

My InterpretationThis song is actually about the band breaking up and how hard it was for Ryan. He said it was a bitter sweet thing. He said this at their reunion tour.
Ryan also talked about how hard the success of Ocean Avenue had on the band. They just blew up and they were young at the time and had no idea how to handle all of the success. So the line:
"It's hard to see you, we are older now". Now they've grown up.

"This is a black and white of you I found
I hang you up and then I pull you down
I hang you up and then I pull you down"- Old pictures from the band. He said it was hard for him to let go of yellow card.
