All my windows were barred
The sun made stripes of shades
I was sitting round like a zombie
Feedin' my own face

I was carrying my cheek
I was digging my strange
I was taking you for granted
You were holding the reins

But I can hear you louder than ever
Whisper to me, help me remember
I can't see you but we're still together
I can hear you louder than ever

It's a slippery slope
Like that mouse trap game
Inside my tunnel vision
You slept on my train

But I can hear you louder than ever
Whisper to me, help me remember
I can't see you but we're still together
Now I can hear you louder than ever

I don't want to ignore
You or the past or my feelings
We're probably gonna get out of this just
Hear me out anyway

The darkness snuck in
And now I'm doubtin' all my promises
Don't try to pull me out of this
Just lay down by me and wait

I can hear you louder than ever
Whisper to me, help me remember
I can't see you but we're still together
I can hear you louder than ever
I can hear you louder than ever
I can hear you louder than ever
I can hear you louder than ever
I can hear you louder than ever

Interesting take Jfaja. Here is the message.

First of all, all lyrics are correct except it is "I was counting my chi, I was digging my strange". This whole song is about a broken relationship/marraige. When the dude falls in a rut (usually caused by the unreasonable female companion. Not all lyrics donate to the message (if any) but rather accompany the preceding line.

All my windows were barred - My feelings toward this relationship are completely shut down
The sun made stripes of shades - Literal, sun shining through bars make stripes of shade (depression) I was sitting round like a zombie - Doing nothing about the depressing marraige and just eating Feedin' my own face

I was counting my Chi - Maybe my good Karma will make things better I was digging my strange - Enjoying the flashes of lust through self or one-nighters I was taken you for granted - literal You were holding the reins

The rest of the song is more about how most relationships end up. Wanting that feeling that used to be there but now trapped in hell. However, hanging on with futile hope.

    or

All my windows were barred - My eyes were failing from the 'stamp' The sun made stripes of shades - The stamp I licked was the zebra print I was sitting round like a zombie - Metaphor for the munchies Feedin' my own face

I was carrying my cheek - Pulling it apart to assist flatulence. I was digging my strange - Elated with fantasy chick in my head I was taken you for granted - Thinking you can handle your H's You were holding the reins - But the stamp was in control

    Lyric Correction

I was carrying my cheek sounds more like "I was counting my sheep", this may not be correct, but I know carrying my cheek isn't the line.

    Lyric Correction

"i was countin' my sheep" may not be right, but it at least sounds more correct than "i was carrying my cheek". it sounds kinda like "i was countin' my cheap", but it's probably not right. the second line also doesn't sound right. it sounds kinda like "the sun made stripes of shade". i know for sure, though, that the words in one part are:

"It's a slippery slope Like that mouse trap game Inside my tunnel vision You stepped on my train"

I thought it was "counting my chi"....chi, like life force in eastern religions? Cause...carrying my cheek? Really?

and it's "taking you for granted" not "taken"

    K, so, wether the lyrics are correct or not, I just wanted to give my point of view on this one;

Well, the guy's kind of crazy, we've seen this fictional downhill character since their first record. So, when his talking about barred windows, he might mean a mental institution. Then he talks about "Taking you for granted, you were holding the (Probably "rails" instead of "Rains"). Now, what I'm going for here, is; I think he's talking to the voices in his head.

If we agree on the fact that he's inside of a mental institution, when he goes to the chorus saying "I can here you louder than ever" and "I can't see you but we're stil together"; He's telling us the medication, electroshocks or whathaveyou, took away the visions of imaginary people, just not the voices, which he still hears. Louder than ever.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
