promise me you'll never settle
promise me you'll find shimmer in every mad hue
the sky does not need to be blue
that's what I learned from you

promise me you'll save your magic
for someone who wants sparkle in their life
let's build a stone house in the woods
i don't know how to not be good to you

you won't need a scale
to weigh how much love I have for
you won't need a clock
to count the minutes I will wait for
you won't need a level
I'll walk on crooked floors if need be
I don't want to forget how to say I love you

promise me if we go ten years
without speaking, you will still dream of me
you'll grow your hair out, I'll cut mine
I'll think about you all the time, all the time

promise me when our bones get brittle
you will still see glitter in everyday life
come blue rain or pink sunshine
we'll still make love all the time, all the time

you won't need a scale
to weigh how much love I have for
you won't need a clock
to count the minutes I will wait for
you won't need a level
I'll walk on crooked floors if need be
I don't want to forget how to say I love you

never settle
never settle
never settle
never settle
I don't want to forget how to say
I don't want to forget how to say I love you

kiss me on my collarbones and I will surely rise
to watch with you the new day to sit there warm in your side
did you know birds can learn new songs?
did you know night was so short?
did you hear the last thing I whispered?
I hope not, I hope not
rest your hands on my cold knees so I may drift to sleep
to dream of curling round you and wake to find you with me

never settle
never settle
never settle
never settle
I don't want to forget how to say
I don't want to forget how to say
I don't want to forget how to say I love you

General CommentI think this song is about blind faith in someones (lover, god, family) love.
When she says "the sky doesnt always have to be blue, i learned that from you" it reminds me of when someone says "if i said the sky was green theyd believe me" meaning that she loves them so much she believes (whoever it is's) lies.
seems plausible yes? but the ending "i dont want to forget how to say i love you" i have no idea. maybe she thinks because her love goes without saying that she doesnt know how to show it...idk..

General CommentI think this song is about someone who has been recently broken up with. The vocalist keeps repeating that she doesn't want to forget (key word) how to say "I love you." She talks about the future and how if they go years without speaking, all of her intimate imagery seems to be prematurely reminiscent. Most tellingly, she wishes for whomever she's singing about to do well when they are no longer around her. Even though things are through between her and the subject, she's still hopelessly in love with them and is in denial that their relationship is over.

This song is sad, but so absolutely lovely.
