"Fly" as written by Jonathan Rotem, Onika Maraj, Kevin Hissink, William Jordan and Clem Penton....
I came to win, to fight, to conquer, to thrive
I came to win, to survive, to prosper, to rise
To fly
To fly

Uh yo, yo,
I wish today it will rain all day
Maybe that will kinda make the pain go away
Trying to forgive you for abandoning me
Praying but I think I'm still an angel away
Angel away, yeah strange in a way
Maybe that is why I chase strangers away
They got their guns out aiming at me
But I become Neo when they aiming at me
Me, me, me against them
Me against enemies, me against friends
Somehow they both seem to become one
A sea full of sharks and they all smell blood
They start coming and I start rising
Must be surprising, I'm just surmising
I win, thrive, soar, higher, higher, higher, more fire

I came to win, to fight, to conquer, to thrive
I came to win, to survive, to prosper, to rise
To fly
To fly

Uh yo, yo
Everybody wanna try to box me in
Suffocating every time it locks me in
Paintin' they own pictures than they crop me in
But I will remain where the top begins
'Cause I am not a word, I am not a line
I am not a girl that can ever be defined
I am not fly, I am levitation
I represent an entire generation
I hear the criticism loud and clear
That is how I know that the time is near
So we become alive in a time of fear
And I ain't got no motherfucking time to spare
Cry my eyes out for days upon days
Such a heavy burden placed upon me
But when you go hard your nay's become yay's
Yankee Stadium with Jay's and Kanye's

I came to win, to fight, to conquer, to thrive
I came to win, to survive, to prosper, to rise
To fly
To fly

Get ready for it
Get ready for it
Get ready for it
I came to win
Get ready for it
Get ready for it
Get ready for it

I came to win, to fight, to conquer, to thrive
I came to win, to survive, to prosper, to rise
To fly
To fly

General CommentI am not fly, I am levitation... saying that her coolness/swagger/appeal is a magic trick or an illusion. everyone possesses the ability to be great, you just need the confidence (or even faking confidence when really youre nervous or insecure) that is the illusion, the magic trick. That one statement is the essence of the whole song. Its great.

General CommentThis Nicki Minaj song featuring Rihanna is just gorgeous! It's a great song for a beautiful drive in the car or working out. To me this song says you will never beat me. No matter what you throw at me, I will still win because I am strong. Very uplifting.

My InterpretationFly by Nicki Minaj in my opinion is a very inspirational song. The song talks about Nicki's struggles throughout her journey to where she is now. The song starts with Rihanna singing the chorus which portrays the whole point of the song. In this chorus Nicki is saying how she believes that she's not here to loose she "came to win, to fight, to conquer" and to thrive. In the music industry, specially in the rap industry, its easy for people to not take you seriously when you are a female but Nicky reassures her listeners or just people that are doubting her that she will survive, she will prosper, she will fly above them and thrive.
The first verse starts by Nicky saying that she wishes that it would rain all day. People usually see rain as something pure and refreshing so she’s hoping that by it raining all day the pain that she is feeling inside will fade and she will feel refreshed. She then directs the next line to a specific person and tells them that she is still trying to forgive them for abandoning her. This could be directed to her father who did abandoned her when she was a young girl. This line connects to the one following it. She says how she’s “praying but I think I’m still an angel away” this line foreshadows how she’s trying to be the best she can be but its hard. By this she’s also meaning that she’s praying that she can forgive this person but their abandonment has hurt her too much. This persons abandonment hurt her so much that she no longer trusts many people especially strangers. She mentions how she chases strangers that hate on her away, people who have their hating “guns out aiming at [her]” but she becomes Neo, the character from The Matrix, and dodges their hating comments. Nicki then mentions how when she started her career it started to be her against the world. Once she got fame even her friends started to become her enemies and started to hate on her. Nicki says how “somehow they both seem to become one” her friends and her enemies. She feels that she is now in a sea surrounded by sharks and her success is like blood that the sharks smell and start to bite on her, or to hate on her. But every time they start to hate on her she just rises up above them and proves them wrong. She jokes and says how she finds this surprising but really she knows the amount of talent she has so she never doubted the fact that she would thrive above their hating comments.
Nicki starts the second verse by saying how everybody else keeps trying to tell her what she should be like, they try to change her looks and her style of rapping by putting her into a box of what they think she should be like. This suffocates her because what they want her to be like is not what she wants to be like at all. She is a very creative person compared to others therefore she will remain at the top because she will not conform to everybody else’s rules and opinions of her. This whole verse Nicky kind of refers it to her critics. She tells them that she’s not just a word or a line in her raps. She is constantly growing and learning and evolving therefore she is not “a girl who could ever be defined”. She is not “fly” or cool she has talent so she can levitate or rise to the top when ever she pleases. On the next line Nicki knows that by choosing the career path she has chosen she not only represents herself but she represents her entire generation so she has to make a good reputation for them. She then says how she hears everybody else’s criticism “loud and clear” and because of this she knows that her time to shine is coming because people don’t start to talk about you until they notice you and until they notice your work. So she may become scared and fear the critics but that is what gives her courage and makes her want to work harder. Sometimes in times when we are really scared we suddenly get an adrenaline rush and in this time is when you chose if you will sink or rise and Nicki here has chosen that she will rise because she has no time to spare her time is now and not later. The next couple of lines become more personal for Nicki. She explains how the music industry and the critics can be tough and sometimes she breaks and cries for days because the burden of making it is so heavy on her, she has to be perfect and has to make it to the top charts. But then she says that all of that doesn't matter because when you truly want something you will work really hard for it and the sad moments you had will become good moments in the future. Nicky then finishes this verse by mentioning a really big accomplishment of hers which was singing at the Yankee stadium with Jay-Z and Kanye West which are big names in the music industry. She also uses this to kind of shut up the critics cause even though they have hated on her she still made it.
The song then becomes really dramatic and slows down and the chorus plays again reaffirming everyone that she is there to win and she will rise above. Then Nicki finally warns everybody else and tells them to get ready cause she’s coming and she’s here to win. The song ends very dramatically with the chorus playing overpowering the music behind it. This makes it feel like the final warning to others that she is there to thrive above them and it makes it sound like Nicki is no longer insecure and she knows that her talent will take her very far.
