In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
I heard that you're settled down
That you found a girl and you're married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things, I didn't give to you
Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it
I had hoped you'd see my face
And that you'd be reminded that for me, it isn't over
Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
"Don't forget me," I beg
I remember you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead"
"Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead"
You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it
I had hoped you'd see my face
And that you'd be reminded that for me, it isn't over
Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
"Don't forget me," I begged
I remember you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead"
Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes, they're memories made
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?
Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
"Don't forget me," I beg
I remember you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead"
Never mind, I'll find someone like you

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
To me, this songs means empowerment and finally telling yourself that you are able to move on.
Its about finding your ex and seeing that they have moved on, and you, being optimistic/stubborn/determined or what you want to call yourself, think you can convince them that you are still the one, only to realize that you are wrong.
And even though you realize you can't have them, you simply tell yourself and possibly them that its not impossible, but you'll find someone like them. Not specifically like them, but someone to share memories and moments with and to give you that remarkable sensation of love.
She's not wishing bad things upon her ex and his new love, she just wants him to remember their love, memories and what they shared.
Its quite beautiful. This song is truly a bittersweet goodbye.
You are absolutely right.. Your post almost made me shed a tear.. I'm sure everyone has gone through a bittersweet experience and can relate to this song.
i love the song !!!! :)
I disagree... There is absolutely nothing empowering about this song. It's about devastation. It's about the realization that it WON'T ever work out, because they've moved on, and you're still madly, hopelessly in love, and the only thing you can console yourself with is "Someday I'll find someone like you". <br /> <br /> It's about breaking down and simply not being able to prevent yourself from trying to interject yourself back into their lives in some way, simply in the hopes that they'll validate you by telling you "yeah, we had some good times", and when that doesn't happen, your only remaining response is "Nevermind, I'll find someone like you."<br /> <br /> It's about that time when you realize they've moved on, and you choke on the words "I wish nothing but the best for you", because it's simultaneously sincere and devastating. It kills you to think that it can't work out for the two of you, but at the same time you genuinely want their relationship to succeed because you know that if it doesn't, the person you love so uncontrollably will probably hurt the same way you do, and that's the last thing you ever want for them. <br /> <br /> Rolling in the deep is an empowering song, but this song is about the days you can barely bring yourself to get out of bed to eat. It's most definitely NOT about moving on.
Thats the beauty in music. Everyone can interpret it differently.<br /> You make very valid and argumentative points, however when I listen and sing this song, it helps me move forward, it helps me realize that I don't need to be hung up on my ex any longer. That I CAN move forward, I CAN move on.. I can find someone like them and I don't need to be upset anymore now that they've moved on. <br /> Why be hung up on someone, who obviously has moved on? <br /> I feel this song is about coming to terms with yourself when your in that state of mind. That state of "I need them back"<br /> <br /> Although Different, I enjoyed your interpretation of this song!
i agree ut wut does that part mean wen she says <br /> "i hope u see my face and be reminded that for me it isnt over..."
lilangel27, I feel that line is telling her ex that "Hey, I still love you, can't you see." <br /> thats what I get out of it. She's finally bringing herself to admit to him that she's still not over him, and she want's him to know, once she realizes that he has moved on she discovers she needs to let go and move on as well. She'll find someone new, someone to love, someone like him.
@cmguido agreed!
@cmguido - I think most interpretations of this song are actually all right. The beauty of her lyrics is that they can speak to people at very different "recovery" points after a relationship. You hear "I'm moving on", kenziarae hears "I'm not over you yet", and the beauty of it is that neither of you is quantifiably "right/wrong" but you both found different personal meaning from the same words while equally identifying with them.
