I am trying to remember all the things that I’ve know
They all shine, soft and stand alone
Like I picture you waiting at the end of a bridge
But it’s hard for me to render up the things that we did
You playing doctor with the door unlocked
Kissing on your cousin and you both got caught
And this how the cleft was formed inside the silent ground
Those words in your mouth
Please leave us alone when we’re dancing
Please leave us alone when we’re dancing
Please leave us alone when we’re dancing
Please leave us alone when we’re dancing
Is your cheek still red from where you caught her hand?
Or are you just in love again
The search party’s out yes they’re hunting your name
but all young lovers they look the same
You were driving with your eyes closed 75
With you foot to the floor and your head to the sky
And this is how the cleft was born inside the silent ground
Those words in your mouth
Please leave us alone when we’re dancing
Please leave us alone when we’re dancing
Please leave us alone when we’re dancing
Please leave us alone when we’re dancing

My InterpretationI think this song is about the fervor and spirit young people have. The chorus "Please leave us alone when we're dancing" reinforces this idea. Whether it be a slow dance or hyperactive club moves, dancing is intimate, and the person in the song wants to experience all that that moment has to offer. Being enveloped by the situation, being mindful of only the present for five minutes, is something young kids are good at.

The verses "You playing doctor with the door unlocked....", show how the protagonist has always been caught up in the moment. Typically only kids play doctor, so we're dealing with a young person at the beginning of the song. They feel excitement at learning the differences between sexes, the embarrassment, the danger. They're so caught up in the act that they forget to lock the door. I'm not pro-incest, but using the cousin makes me think that all of this is innocent. I don't think kids know they're not supposed to kiss family members, I think they see someone they like and they feel something only they can share it with.

Further time a bit and now the person's a bit older- driving age. The freedom of the road is exhilarating, pump up the speed and let your body feel the wind. "With your foot to the floor and your head to the sky...."

"All young lovers they look the same," says to me that this is all kids. All kids just want to be taken care of, they want freedom, they are passionate. "And this is how the path was born inside the silent ground," means this is where certain passions and tastes started bearing fruit. We all have a past.

The song makes me think of a school dance. Boys nibbling at the edge of puberty, girls becoming women, all of these changes thrown together in a room. What do you do but muster your courage and ask the pretty girl you see to dance? In a way this could be applied to life- we all have our pasts, the reasons we are the way we are, we just need the courage to accept that, and confront the present.
