"We're All Alone" as written by and W. Scaggs....
Outside the rain begins
And it may never end
So cry no more, on the shore a dream
Will take us out to sea
Forevermore, forevermore

Close your eyes and dream
And you can be with me
'Neath the waves, through the cave of hours
Long forgotten now
We're all alone, we're all alone

Close the window, calm the light
And it will be all right
No need to bother now
Let it out, let it all begin
Learn how to pretend

Once a story's told
It can't help but grow old
Roses do, lovers too, so cast
Your seasons to the wind
And hold me dear, oh, hold me dear

Close the window, calm the light
And it will be all right
No need to bother now
Let it out, let it all begin
All's forgotten now
We're all alone, all alone

Close the window, calm the light
And it will be all right
No need to bother now
Let it out, let it all begin
Owe it to the wind, my love oh, hold me dear

All's forgotten now, my love,
We're all alone, we're all alone

General CommentI am surprised there is no comment on this beautiful song. First of all, a correction. 'Close your eyes Ami' should be Close your eyes and dream.

Not all loving relationship is plain sailing. We all must experience ups and downs in our relationship. This songs captures the moment where the two in love just wants to forget all the bad memories and enjoy the moment of 'loneliness' of two. I particularly like the words of 'cry no more on the shore, a dream will take us out to sea'. We all need this to transcend our imperfectness.

Rita Coolidge, Linda Eder have also sang this song. It is Boz's version I like most.Does anyone know who is the original singer of this song?

General CommentA beautiful song by Boz Scaggs. One of the best off the magical Silk Degrees album.
When I was teenager, I had a friend who insisted on playing only loud grating music by Led Zeppelin, and the like. But when he heard this song in my house he was stunned. He wanted to listen to it repeatedly.

Though I've listened to this song intently dozens of times, I could never understand the wording. Perhaps it was the phrasing, perhaps Boz's accent, whatever. The LP didn't come with lyrics in the sleave.
But now that I read the song, I think the meaning is fairly clear. It's about two people finding safety and comfort in each other. We're all alone, safe from the concerns of the outside world.
The singer quiets and calms his worried companion. We're safe here together. 'Close the window, calm the light'. Whatever bad story she has experienced, it doesn't need to be told, 'throw it to the wind'; like roses, it will wither. She can escape it now. If need be, they can escape together in the quietness of a dream.

General CommentI think they're not together anymore. The woman might've been suffering of a broken heart still. The man is telling her not to cry anymore. By closing her eyes and remembering the good memories that they had together which has long been forgotten, they could be together in her thoughts.

Let it out, let it all begin. Let all the good memories out and begin to remember what they had. Pretend that they're together.

He's telling her to sort of forgive him, I think? To throw it to the wind. Whatever happened in the past it will fade away and the hurt will be gone. Everything fades. He's asking her to relive the good memories and to hold him dear in her thoughts.

All's forgotten now. All the sad experience has been forgotten...all the hurt. Time to move on and with them moving on, the pain will be gone. With the pain gone, there is nothing left but the memories. In those memories, they're all alone.

Song MeaningActually, the ones above are the correct lyrics. The original version is the one written by Boz Scaggs which he wrote in 1976.

Rita Coolidge changed the lyrics of the song to "close your eyes and dream" in her 1977 version. Frankie Valli was the first cover of the song as followed by Canadian singer's version by Bruce Murray in 1977.

The meaning of the song is about forgiving past loves and throwing one's caution to the wind. Dee7's comment i believe is most apt.

General CommentI realized the meaning of this song AFTER I was in that situation. If I have just known it BEFORE then I would have known how to get closer to her. She (STEPHANIE) had a problem and was really down and hurt from her past relationship but the guy wants her back, and she was confused... Just in that time I got to know her and fell in love at first sight, and her friends supported me by saying I am better than her guy... She gave me the very precious chance and her friend (NERIZZA) took us to the BEACH at midnight and left us two ALL ALONE in that beach. We talked shyly cos we both do not know how to start, and I wanted to hold her hand or kiss her but I did not have any courage or was too afraid I may violate or shock her... Then it STARTED TO RAIN, and I was at a loss of ideas or suggestions or any moves, so we walked away from the beach and rode the public jeepney, where she got down at her house and I went home too... The next day I listened to this song and I said wow, that could have been what was supposed to really happen if I only knew before the true meaning of this song. WE WERE ALL ALONE and I did not know what to do. The next day she texted me that she and her guy are back together. It really hurts me now.

My InterpretationThis interpretation only works if you allow that some of the lyrics might have been adjusted slightly to make it sound more like a love song (because the "original" lyrics were too depressing :-).

    Rain = sadness, depression
May never end = overwhelming depression, threatening survival (I have to do something or I'll kill myself)
shore = reality (experienced by child)
dream ,,, out to sea = unreality (fictions of the adult world, finances, politics, economics)
forever more = once you close your soul to the magic of the world that a child knows, you become an adult and there is no going back
close your eyes = no longer see the true beauty of the world
neath the waves = waves of sadness
cave of hours = darkness of depression, makes time slow to a crawl, also night is cave of hours?
long forgotten now = the depression that threatens survival is repressed because it is too painful, so is forgotten by us adults, we even deny it ever happened to us
we're all alone = I'm all alone - the peculiar experience of teenage depression
close the window = on the real world
calm the light = no longer see the magic of the world, see only physical things
and it will be alright = depression will end, self will survive
    let it out = cry
let it all begin = let it all end (I suspect the lyric was changed; notice END rhymes better!)
learn how to pretend = be like an adult (as seen by a teenage child who first realises the corruption of the world, poverty, injustice, and adults pretending its all ok)
can't help but grow old = once through the crisis, life is empty, just going to grow old; need to fill it up with something ...
cast..to the wind = waste the rest of your life pursuing sex, money, power, ... anything so long as it distracts you from what you've lost
hold me dear = try and fill the void by looking for love

So the big changes would be:
    Let it all *end*
    *I'm* all alone

I expect no-one to agree with this interpretation. That's ok.
i would have thought so myself until I read Species in Denial by Jeremy Griffith.
Now I think this song is what he calls a "Resignation Anthem"

General CommentInterpretation becomes clearer when you put the comma after "on the shore, A dream...." he is saying that times are sad and they aren't together literally. "Outside the rain begins..." and it may never end" means there is no clear end to this trouble or this hard desperation. AND now he is about to say it doesn't really matter if you come away with me in a dream.
So cry no more on the shore." (She is crying in a lonely place by herself....but he can take her away from this, if... )
Here we go.... important part comes next...
A DREAM ...WILL TAKE US OUT TO SEA....FOREVERMORE, EVERMORE.

NOW, he speaks to his love
"Close your eyes Ami, and you can be with me"
This repeats the same thought as before....they CAN be together in this way.
'Neath the waves through the caves of ours, long forgotten now."
Ok, were is he taking her? To the sea....away from the safety (yet sadness) of land/shore. So next line develop s the idea....heath the waves of memory (sea) in their own caves of exclusions, they can be together again in this place, though forgotten by others, not to them...not now anyway.

We're all alone..we're all alone" alone together. Yes, they two are alone together in their cave of togetherness. If course. alsoYet, also they are desperately alone in reality... a great sadness that they are fighting through this journey together in their hearts and minds.

We could go on, but you get the rest now, nowi am sure.
Close the window calm the light
And it will be all right
    No need to bother now
Let it out let it all begin
Learn how to pretend..... this is what they are doing. Turning away all distractions, there is nothing to be bothered about now, just their journey in their minds.

    Once a storys told
It can't help but grow old
Roses do lovers too so cast
    Your seasons to the wind
And hold me dear..oh hold me dear

My InterpretationThis song, like many, can hold different meanings depending on what the audience brings to the table, so to speak. I first heard this song in 1977, a year after my young son died and I immediately took those words as words of comfort to help a loved one find a way to move on:
    "Outside the rain begins
    And it may never end
So cry no more on the shore a dream
Will take us out to sea
For ever more.. for ever more"
(The pain of loss seems unending but there is relief to be found in dreams that take us out to sea, the sea symbolizing a smooth peaceful flowing venue away from land - the reality that binds us to pain)

    "Close your eyes and dream
And you can be with me
'Neath the waves through the caves of ours
    Long forgotten now
We're all alone..we're all alone" (In dreams our lost ones can be with us in 'caves of ours' meaning a private place where only you two can be together as you were as you were in times past)

"Close the window calm the light
And it will be all right
    No need to bother now
Let it out let it all begin
Learn how to pretend" (the harsh screaming reality that is daily life - calm the light, it will help ease the loss...dont be afraid to 'go there' because relief will be found in learning how to pretend as you relive your happy times. The No need to bother now, nothing can be changed, so let it out - grieve your loss and let the healing begin)

    "Once a storys told
It can't help but grow old
Roses do lovers too so cast
    Your seasons to the wind
And hold me dear..oh hold me dear" (The loss has happened, we can dwell on that and immerse ourselves in the hurt but it's life's way...things begin and things end. Its the oldest truth that exists...So cast your seasons to the wind - accept that truth and hold me "dear" - as in keep loving me and being with me in that special place in dreams)

    "All's forgotten now
We're all alone..all alone" (nothing else matters except this special place - Our place where Only we can be together...dreams)
