"Give Out" as written by and Sharon Van Etten....
There were your eyes in the dark of the room
The only ones shining
The only set I had met in years
It's not because I always look down
It might be I always look out
It might be I always look out
I am biting my lip
As confidence is speaking to me
I loosen my grip from my palm
Put it on your knee
In my way
I say
You're the reason why I'll move to the city or
Why I'll need to leave
You're the reason why I'll move to the city or
Why I'll need to leave

There was your breath on the back of my neck
The only one holding
The only one I had felt in years
It's not because I always hold on
It might be I always hold out
It might be I always hold out
I am biting my lip
As confidence is speaking to me
I loosen my grip from my palm
Put it on your knee
In my way
I say
You're the reason why I'll move to the city or
Why I'll need to leave
You're the reason why I'll move to the city or
Why I'll need to leave

So what's with the eyes in the back of the room?
The only ones trying
The only ones I have let in years
It's not because I always give up
It might be I always give out
It might be I always give out
It might be I always give out
It might be I always give out

Lyric CorrectionThese are the official lyrics:

There were your eyes in the dark of the room,
    The only ones shining,
The only set I had met in years.
It's not because I always look down.
It might be I always look out.
It might be I always look out.
    I am biting my lip
As confidence is speaking to me.
I loosen my grip from my palm,
    Put it on your knee.
    In my way,
    I say
You're the reason why I'll move to the city or
    Why I'll need to leave.
You're the reason why I'll move to the city or
    Why I'll need to leave.

There was your breath on the back of my neck,
    The only one holding,
The only one I had felt in years.
It's not because I always hold on,
It might be I always hold out.
It might be I always hold out.

So what's with the eyes in the back of the room?
    The only ones trying.
The only ones I have let in years.
It's not because I always give up,
It might be I always give out.
It might be I always give out.
It might be I always give out.
It might be I always give out.

General CommentI hear it this way:

There were your eyes in the dark, of the room.
    The only ones shining
the only set I have met in years.

It's not because I always look down
It might be I always look out
It might be I always look out

    I'm biting my lip
as confidence is speaking to me
I loosen my grip from my palm
and put it on your knee
    In my way, I say
you're the reason why I'll move to the city
or why I'll need to leave
you're the reason why I'll move to the city
or why I'll need to leave

    There was your breath
on the back of my neck
    The only one holding
the only one I had let in years

It's not because I always hold out
it might be I always hold on
it might be I always hold on

    I'm biting my lip
as confidence is speaking to me
I loosen my grip from my palm
and put it on your knee
    In my way, I’ll say
you're the reason why I'll move to the city
or why I'll need to leave.
you're the reason why I'll move to the city
or why I'll need to leave

So what's with the eyes in the back of the room
    The only ones trying
the only ones I have let in years
It's not because I always give up
It might be I always give out
It might be I always give out
It might be I always give out
It might be I always give out

General Commentkeep in mind, these are all variations on live interpretations... since the album isn't out yet. i've heard it several times, with slight differences. in most cases, i've chosen the way in which i've heard it more often than not.

there were your eyes in the dark of the room
    the only ones shining
the only set i had met in years

it's not because i always look down
it might be i always look out
it might be i always look out

    i am biting my lip
as confidence is speaking to me
i loosen my grip from my palm
and put it on your knee

    in my way, i say
you're the reason why i'll move to the city,
you're why i'll need to leave
you're the reason why i'll move to the city,
you're why i'll need to leave

there was your breath on the back of my neck
    the only one holding
the only one i had felt in years

it's not because i always hold out
it might be i always hold on
it might be i always hold on

    i am biting my lip
as confidence is speaking to me
i loosen my grip from my palm
and put it on your knee

    in my way, i say
you're the reason why i'll move to the city,
you're why i'll need to leave
you're the reason why i'll move to the city,
you're why i'll need to leave

so what's with the eyes in the back of the room
    the only ones trying
the only ones i had let in years

it's not because i always give up
it might be i always give out
it might be i always give out
it might be i always give out
it might be i always give out

My InterpretationThis narrates a first encounter, with someone that stands out in the crowd.

The reason of moving to city, for a meaningful relationship, and also the reason to leave, after it ends.

This is followed by a meditation on why such encounters are not more common. She doesn't look down, but looks out, beyond the people she meets. And doesn't give up on relationships but always gives out, makes a desire for something else felt.
