"Sailing" as written by and Bradford Cox....
Wind in my sails, I lived for days.
No water, no food. It was good.
I didn't mind, no. Nowhere to be.
Nothing to see, except me.

Only fear
Can make you feel lonely out here.
You learn to accept
Whatever you can get.

When there is no law
You've done nothing wrong.
You can't take too long
Making up songs.

Only fear
Can make you feel lonely out here.
You learn to accept
Whatever you can get.
Whatever you can get.

Only fear
Can make you feel lonely out here.
You learn to accept
Whatever you can get.
Whatever you can get.

My Opinionhelicopter is good and all.. but i'd say this for me was the quiet standout track in halcyon digest.

General CommentIt's a pretty song, but its lyrics admittedly perplex me. I could see it as a philosophy on living life. Although then the no water/food thing doesn't make much sense to me, among other things. I'm starting to think the lyrics are more sensational than they are meaningful. But I also think it's entirely intentional. My favorite song on the album, actually.

Song MeaningOn the surface, the song is about being alone in the middle of the ocean on a boat (hence the name). The narrator is isolated, away from the rest of the world. There are no rules or laws that he is required to follow. He doesn't need anybody or anything. No food, water, friends, etc. He has no emotional attachments to anything. He learns to just live and accept life as it is, with no fear or worries.

I think the song is metaphorical for some king of interior struggle within Cox.

General CommentPretty great chords, by the way - gotta love how the phrases in the verse start in Eb minor and end up in E so seamlessly!

My InterpretationFor me, this song means way more than said. Bradford Cox, the lead singer of Deerhunter has Marfan's Syndrome and he had to deal with a lot being physically awkward in school. In this song he says, "Only fear can make you feel lonely out here." I think he wants the audience to know to accept who he is, no matter his differences. Another thing that is more obvious is that he enjoys being lonely and in his own world.
This song is beautiful and personally I think it would be a good song to make out to...

General CommentHow am I the first to comment on this masterpiece?

    Suspiciously blissful isolation.
