I was your girl in the world that never was
In a town where you never lived.
I listened to your band, just like everybody does.
You touched me under the iron bridge.

But left me on the moors
My body bound by chords
Whistling your melodies
To keep me company
In the world that never was

As warm as blood
As soft as tears
Some kids are in the video
& some kids disappear
From the world that never was

I was your whore in the war that never was.
Did you bury me?
Like an empty time capsule in tattered tartan pajamas?
Do you consider this poetry?

Because I do, or I don't
Because I will, or I won't
But I just can't see how
I will ever grow up now
In the world that never was

As warm as blood
As soft as tears
Some kids are in the video
& some kids disappear
From the world that never was

& the stars shine brighter & brighter
The stars shine brighter & brighter
The stars shine brighter & brighter
Until they go out.

& the stars shine brighter & brighter
The stars shine brighter & brighter
The stars shine brighter & brighter
Until they go out.

& the darkness around you
The darkness surrounds you
The darkness has found you all over again.

I put out, gave it up
In the world that never was

General CommentSeems to me this is a song about a kid who has been kidnapped dreaming about a life that isn't going to happen now, because she's been well, killed in some way. The stars she sees fade as she dies. This entire album is pretty fantastic, but it feels like The Smiths, in sort of happy lovey sounding songs about horrible things.
