This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. I knew this would be a beautiful song when I heard the short instrumental clip of it that had been floating around the internet a few months ago. After hearing the full version, I was not disappointed. Initially, I figured all this "heart" stuff, has to be about love, or a broken heart, but after listening to it several times I think it's about addiction, and recovering from addiction. He can't compete with the clear eyes of strangers, losing friends,he mentions it's the first step and day one everytime, which is always the case when you're struggling to be sober. You could easily attribute it to a caustic love as well. Either way, it's a sad but hopeful song, and further cements my love for Jimmy Eat World.
