Started off as a one night stand, lingered to a fling
The sirens and the sergeants didn't seem to mean a thing
Hide your fangs all you want, you still need the blood
Tell us that it's different now, you're up to no good

Take my hand, show me the way
We are the children that fell from grace
Take my hand, show me the way
We are the children who can't be saved

One more nail in the coffin, one more foot in the grave
One more time I'm on my knees as I try to walk away
How has it come to this?

I've said it once, I've said it twice, I've said it a thousand fuckin' times
That I'm okay, that I'm fine, that it's all just in my mind
But this has got the best of me and I can't seem to sleep
And it's not 'cause you're not with me, it's 'cause you never leave

(I've said it once, I've said it twice, I've said it a thousand fuckin' times)
(You say this is suicide?)

You say this is suicide? I say this is a war
And I'm losing the battle, man down, man down, oh
This is what you call love?
This is a war I can't win

One more nail in the coffin, one more foot in the grave
One more time I'm on my knees as I try to walk away
Everything I loved became everything I lost

I've said it once, I've said it twice, I've said it a thousand fuckin' times
That I'm okay, that I'm fine, that it's all just in my mind
But this has got the best of me and I can't seem to sleep
And it's not 'cause you're not with me, it's 'cause you never leave
And it's not 'cause you're not here with me, it's 'cause you never leave

Every second, every minute, every hour, every day
It never ends, it never ends
Every second, every minute, every hour, every day
It never ends, it never ends
Every second, every minute, every hour, every day
It never ends, it never ends
Every second, every minute, every hour, every day
It never ends, it never ends

"Started off as a one night stand. Lingered to a fling." The relationship wasn't anything either of them intended to get into, it just followed on from one night, almost like a routine.

"Hide your fangs all you want, you still need the blood." Everytime the two argue she turns on him, feeling a sense of entitlement to whatever she wishes to and with him, hurting him with words.

"Tell us that it's different now, you're up to no good." This follows from the previous line, presumably he tries to make her understand how things are from his perspective, she tries to tell him and herself that things have changed, but he knows they haven't and won't, she needs him and will say whatever she can to keep him trapped.

"Take my hand, show me the way, we are the children that fell from grace. Take my hand, show me the way, we are the children who can't be saved." This stanza almost stands alone as a plea, perhaps an anthem for the fans who feel or have felt they way Oli has felt. Almost a cry for help, for someone to show him the way.

"One more nail in the coffin. One more foot in the grave." Every time the two argue, Oli feels like it's just one more shot at him, one more wound she's inflicting, every time she beats him down to the point he feels totally trapped and condemned to being stuck in the relationship.

"One more time I'm on my knees, as I try to walk away." Oli wants to and trys to walk away but each time she finds a way to stop him, bringing him down to her level with reminders of things said perhaps, the past they shared, the future they spoke of.

"How has it come to this?" He can't believe what things have gotten to, what he's let himself become for her.

"I've said it once. I've said it twice. I've said it a thousand fucking times. That I'm ok, that I'm fine. That it's all just in my mind." He tries to tell himself he's okay, that the way he feels is unreasonable, and that it's just him making a big deal out of things.

"But this has got the best of me. And I can't seem to sleep." "Deep down he knows the truth of the situation, the truth of her. And that's why he can't sleep, that's why it's got the best of him, he knows just what a mess things are, just how fucked up it all is, but he feels like he just can't get away.

"It's not cause you're not with me. It's cause you never leave." Sometimes he questions himself, whether he misses her, or feels like something is missing and that's what hurts, but really he knows it's because no matter what happens she's in his head, he's trapped with knowing exactly what she thinks and her judgement, she's so deep inside him that wherever he is she's there.

"You say this is suicide? I say this is a war." He wants to walk away, he tries to find a solution, but all he faces are accusations that he's giving up, and walking away, taking an easy route out, but to him it's a fight to save himself from letting her take him and everything he wants and needs before it's too late.

"And I'm losing the battle. Man down, man down." He's taking on the fight but the further he goes the harder it gets and the more he feels like he's got no hope and that it's gonna be the death of him, that she's won.

"Is this what you call love?" As previously mentioned she eternally questions him, doubting his every word telling him of love, but the reality is their love is long dead to him, and it's what's bringing him down being trapped with her.

"This is a war I can't win." The love is gone, and his only option now is to try and salvage what little he has left, and it all seems impossible, but to fight and fail is of so much more meaning than to let her take everything from him.

"Every second. Every minute. Every hour. Every day. It never ends. It never ends." Generally seems to sum up the state of things, his feeling of been trapped in a never ending cycle of arguments and unhappiness, with no release and no chance of escape. Almost like he is facing up to the hopelessness of what prospects he has left.

I know this is pretty in-depth just what I think the songs about, would love to hear some more input tho!

    Song Meaning

This song compares self-injury to an abusive relationship. I disagree with the opinion that it's about an actual relationship. The video doesn't make sense if that's what it means.

"Started off as a one night stand. Lingered to a fling. The sirens and the sergeants didn't seem to mean a thing."

He started cutting without the intent of getting addicted. He just wanted to relieve his depression and anxiety that one time, but the urge to cut came back. Even after being taken to the hospital in an ambulance (hence the sirens and the ambulance in the video) and having cops drag him to the hospital (that actually happens by the way), he kept cutting.

"Hide your fangs all you want, you still need the blood. Tell us that it's different now, you're up to no good."

No matter how much he denies his addiction, he still needs to cut.

"Take my hand, show me the way, we are the children that fell from grace. Take my hand, show me the way, we are the children who can't be saved."

He feels hopeless in his situation.

"One more nail in the coffin. One more foot in the grave. One more time I'm on my knees, as I try to walk away. How has it come to this?"

He knows that as he cuts deeper he gets closer to death, but every time he tries to beat his addiction, he's overcome with depression that puts him in a hopeless state.

"I've said it once. I've said it twice. I've said it a thousand fucking times. That I'm okay, that I'm fine. That it's all just in my mind. But this has got the best of me. And I can't seem to sleep. It's not cause you're not with me. It's cause you never leave."

When he doesn't have to cut, he feels fine, and he promises that he'll simply refuse to pick up a razor in the future. However, the urge returns, and it's all he can think about. He can't sleep without cutting. He feels like it dominates his life.

"You say this is suicide? I say this is a war. And I'm losing the battle. Man down, man down."

The outsiders don't understand his struggle and misinterpret his self-injury as suicide attempts. In reality he's cutting to keep from being depressed, but it's taking over his life.

"Is this what you call love? This is a war I can't win."

This brings back the metaphor comparing self-injury to a relationship. He feels like his cutting is an abusive girlfriend who's destroying him.

"One more nail in the coffin. One more foot in the grave. One more time I'm on my knees, as I try to walk away. Everything I loved, became everything I lost."

I've already interpreted this part. The last line shows how self-injury ruined his life.

"I've said it once. I've said it twice. I've said it a thousand fucking times. That I'm ok, that I'm fine. That it's all just in my mind. But this has got the best of me. And I can't seem to sleep. It's not cause you're not with me. It's cause you never leave. It's not cause you're not here with me. It's cause you never leave."

    I've already interpreted this part.

"Every second. Every minute. Every hour. Every day. It never ends. It never ends. Every second. Every minute. Every hour. Every day. It never ends. It never ends. Every second. Every minute. Every hour. Every day. It never ends. It never ends. Every second. Every minute. Every hour. Every day. It never ends. It never ends."

He has lost the battle against his cutting. It's completely taken over his life, and it's all he can think about.

The video for this song goes along very well with the lyrics. It shows Oli in an ambulance connected to a machine giving him blood, due to how much he's lost from cutting. Then he's floating along a road in a position as if he were hanging from a noose. This is his hallucination as he is very close to death.

I'm not sure about the people chasing the car, but this is one possible explanation: the first is Serpent. This is probably a reference to the serpent in the Garden of Eden. Self-injury was like a forbidden fruit that caused problems.

The next is Leech, which represents his addiction.

The next is Consequence, which is a cop. This represents all the times that emergency vehicles were sent to his house to take him to the hospital. (This can happen when someone tells a person at a helpline that they've cut themselves.)

The next is the Enabler. I'm not sure about the person, but I'm guessing that something enabled him to keep cutting. Maybe the fact that the Enabler is wearing something on his wrists is significant.

The next is the Dirt, which is the horrible situation where he found himself after getting so deeply into self-injury.

All of these people have become a part of his life, and they chase him when he tries to run away from them. The only way to "lose them" is for Oli to die. This is why the nurse rips out his heart. He has gotten so addicted to cutting that he feels it's impossible to overcome it in life. The nurse's action probably stands in place of cutting fatally. I don't know why they chose this comparison.

The end of the video is Oli accepting that he's going to die. It is only by this that he is able to escape from the demons that chase him throughout his life.

The moral of the story is this: Cutting is FUCKING SCARY.

This song is amazing by the way.

olli explains it on his fansite. he has a heroine addiction. im an addict in recovery and i listen to this song everyday at least once to remind me of my reality. "started off as a one night stand, lingered to a fling" he tried it once and then more and more often. " the sirens and the sergents didnt seem to mean a thing" the women in his life and the authority figures such as his label producers, it didnt matter to him what they thought about it. " hide your fangs all you want u still need the blood, tell us that its different now ur up to no good" he tries to hide it but he still needs it and he puts on this mask for all of his loved ones and says hes ok and not hooked but he is. "take my had show me the way we are the children who fell from grace" help us we are addicted and cant stop. "take my had show me the way, we are the children who cant be saved" we are addicts and will always be addicted. "one more nail in the coffin one more foot in the grave one more time im on my knees trying to walk away" im getting closer and closer to death and losing everything i keep trying to stop and i want to but i cant. "How has it come to this?" "ive said it once ive said it twice ive said it a thousand fucking times, that im ok, that im fine, that its all just in my mind" hes in denial and trying to convince himself he dosent have a problem. "But this has got the best of me and i cant seem to sleep" hes powerless over his addiction and its driving him nuts. "and its not that youre not here with me its that youll never leave. "and its not the lack of his drug of choice thats tearing him apart, its the realization that he will always be an addict. "you say this is suicide? i say this is a war. and im losing the battle mandown mandown" hes contemplating suicide to end the torture and hes struggling to stay sober, mandown represents relapse. "this is what you call love? this is, a war, i cant win" speaking to his drug of choice as if personified hes saying this high followed by the comedown and the stress and pain u bring in my life is love? and he can never beat his addiction, just continue fighting till hes dead. "one more nail in the coffin, one more foot in the grave one more time im on my knees trying to walk away, everything i loved and everything ive lost" hes remembering everyone he has hurt and all that he has lost because of his drug use. "every second, every minute, every hour, every day, It Never Ends." he will, just as i will, and every other addict on the fucking planet will battle this addiction all day everyday until the day we die. that is the meaning of this song. much deeper than problems with the band or problems with a girl. he poured his heart into those lyrics. btw hes doing better and glad to say so am i. i hope this answered some questions and helped someone out. i really hope this helps someone out.

I like you guy's interpretation of the song, but when I read the lyrics I had something else in mind.

I get the impression that what he is trying to say is that, he wants to reject the idea of a God, that there isn't a hell, and that there isn't a Heaven, but there is something that always reminds him that there is a possiblitie. The beginning reminds me of someone in an ambulance on the border line of life and death, or maybe that person had died, but was brought back to life, and they see that there is a life beyond our world. And this scares the man and he tries to believe that everything he had seen was fake because it means he would have to completely change his beliefs.

He tries to so hard to reject the idea, but it keeps haunting him to the point to where he can't sleep. And he see's that the problem is that it's not because he isn't living wiht God, but because God won't leave him.

In the beginning, on the ambulance there is an upside down cross, on the front of the ambulance it says BMTH666, but at the end of the video it replaces the T it "IT" with a right side up cross, representing a new perspective. I also got part of this idea from seeing him float through the clouds, it made me think of Heaven. And the Album of the title also influenced my interpretation of the song, "There is a Hell believe me I've seen it, there is a Heaven lets keep it a secret."

I'm sure they had no intention for this to be seen as a religious song, but it's just my interpretation.

just throwing in i think this song is in a sense an allusionto The Sadness Never Ends. i know that theyve done stuff like that before (with Rawwwr! and Diamonds Aren't Forever.) Even though its a different subject, its still about sadness so theyre getting at the fact that even NOW the sadness is there every second of every day. I dont know thats just something i noticed and thought maybe it fit.

    My Interpretation

No one has really interpreted this song yet, so I'll be the first.

This song compares self-injury to an abusive relationship.

"Started off as a one night stand. Lingered to a fling. The sirens and the sergeants didn't seem to mean a thing."

He feels hopeless in his situation.

"One more nail in the coffin. One more foot in the grave. One more time I'm on my knees, as I try to walk away. How has it come to this?"

It's not about a relationship of Oli's OR self-harm. Sure, those subjects are incorperated into the song, but ultimately it's about Oli's struggle of being as famous as he is, and this song is his way of portraying the evils he's seen, and the opinions of everyone else in relation to these 'seemingly' harmless 'enemies'. Seriously, thinking it's about cutting yourself OR relationships? Give them more credit than that, if it was, as has already been said, the video would not make sense.

In the video clip, it starts with "It Never Ends", then the struggle of trying to run away from the enemy begins, and ends with; "It Never Ends". The video, in a metaphorical sense, is the struggle Oli faces, every second, every minute, every hour, every day...

"At war, with an enemy, who does not rest, who will never relent." - Parkway

"Started off as a one night stand. Lingered to a fling." When Oli started the band, he never imagined the level of fame he'd produce, and so a one night stand lingered into more...

"The sirens and the sergeants didn't seem to mean a thing." Even though the world was full of 'safety' and 'hope', it seems in Oli's mind, aswell as mine, that the problem that became apparent in 'his own mind' was something soo destructive and soo powerful, that all below would turn into loveless fiends; The Serpentine Woman, The Business Leach, The Consequence, The Dirt (Snitch), and The Enabler (Ignorant of his own actions).

And in the face of such an evil, even without being able to see directly see it, odds are, the police and ambulance are doing more harm than good, because not even the nurse knows she's a fiend...

"Hide your fangs all you want, you still need the blood." This is highly metaphorical, because it incorperates all aspects of the 'followers'. People can 'attempt' to lie, and hide their fangs, but at the end of the day it's obvious, the banker still wants his money, the serpent still wants her form of satisfaction, the consequence wants to be viewed as the consequence, the snitch wants to be the 'savior', and the enabler still wants to have fun. All in all, they still need 'the blood', the blood that fuels their Ego.

"Tell us that it's different now, you're up to no good." As previously mentioned, all these varieties of people can hide between different facades. But if a banker really told you it was different, would you believe him? The man who had previously lied? If the snitch told you he's not a snitch anymore, would you believe him? If The Enabler told you he's not gonna spend you're money on 'fun', would you believe him? If The Serpend told you she loved and you and that it was different, would you believe someone who cheated? The obvious conclusion is no, which makes it apparent, that when those people say things are going to be different, it's usually in the sense of being 'different' for them, usually benefiting ONLY them. Up to no good...

"Take my hand, show me the way, we are the children that fell from grace. Take my hand, show me the way, we are the children who can't be saved." This is a sneaky stanza, true. This is why THIS song is the first to be released. The album itself will breed similar lyrics and meaning, and will ultimately change the way 'the children/us' view the world we live in. This is more of a statement than anything else, for Oli would know that with instrumentals like this, people would give the video the attention it deserves, therefore enabling the consciousness to see past the obvious, therefore giving way to the 'salvation/awakening'.

"One more nail in the coffin. One more foot in the grave." I feel this part is a play on time and truth. Because as the song iterates, things like this, with enemies like these, are nailing our coffins EVERY SECOND OF EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY HOUR OF EVERY DAY!!! It never ends... it never ends... Unless we stop it?

"One more time I'm on my knees, as I try to walk away." Same as before, basically saying that even though he knows what's wrong, and knows that it's dangerous, he simply CANNOT walk away, because of his position in life. So no, even though his mind is telling him "RUN!!!", he's simply on his knees trying to work out his next step, never succumbing to retreat.

"How has it come to this?" How did it ever come to multiple albums, lawsuits, struggle, new found knowledge, and now a new song? Secretly thinking whilst writing the song "I hope this works..."

"I've said it once. I've said it twice. I've said it a thousand fucking times. That I'm okay, that I'm fine, that it's all just in my mind!!!" This is Oli's reaction to how people view him. As a serious guy with some pretty heavy thoughts he's pretty good at keeping himself sane and keeping his intellect sharp. And this is basically a response to every 'ignorant moron' who's ever come up to him asking if he's alright, or okay. When in reality, Oli's more worried about the person asking the question than he is for himself...

"But this has got the best of me. And I can't seem to sleep." BUT 'THIS' (The Song, The New Enemy, The 'Calling' To Help Others, The Urge To Change Music Styles, The Need For More Meaningful, and The Urge To Fight The War!!!) HAS GOT THE BEST OF ME!!! AND I CAN'T SEEM TO SLEEP!!! Because sleep would be viewed as a waste of time, for his mind needs to release before it can refresh, hence his need to write the song...

Odds are he's sleeping better as of late. Basking in his success with the song, and the effect it's having ;)

"It's not cause you're not with me. It's cause you never leave." This is lyrical genius! This portraits the 'herd mentality', and how the problem is NOT that he doesn't have enough fans, or that he's not loved enough, the problem is in the 'herd mentality's way of just standing idle watching an actionless room... Like a bunch of people watching someone fight a WAR. WATCHING Oli, as oppose to fighting with Oli... The problems not, that you're staring idly, it's just you'll never leave!!!

"You say this is suicide? I say this is a war." You say it's suicide to fight the system and the herd mentality? WE say, THIS IS A WAR!!!

"And I'm losing the battle. Man down, man down." The is a 'video clip special', in the sense that it only makes sense 'through' the video. Oli claims he's losing the battle, and he's struggling with staying alive. MAN DOOOOOWN!!! MAAAN DOOOOOOangelic heaven glimpse WOOOOOAAAHH!!!! *Springs back to life with the understanding that he's not alone, but nonetheless still fighting...

"Is this what you call love?" A question to all those 'involved' in the system, the nurse is 'trying to help' Oli, but in reality she's doing more harm than good, and when she looks out of the ambulance towards the aggressors she see's a deadened reflection of herself in them all, in a realization that if given enough incentive, she'd become one of the aggressors as well, mindlessly chasing, only seeking self-fulfillment.

"This is a war I can't win." Almost an ending statement, "Okay, so I've shown you the problems, I've shown you that it's all in your mind, I've shown you that there's a constant heaven, I've shown you a video representation of the battle I go through everyday, and I've shown you that most of the time, I'm running alone... Join me."

"Every second. Every minute. Every hour. Every day. It never ends. It never ends." Finishing with an addendum, that states that the problem, as of current, NEVER ENDS!!! Because nurses, policeman, businessman, hooligans, and snitches still don't know their the problem. And until they do, or until they're stopped; It Never Ends...

"So join me..." Would be what Oli wanted to say at the end...

    Peace xx

"It started off with a one-night stand and lingered to a fling."

"One more foot in the coffin. One more foot in the grave. One more time I'm on my knees and trying to walk away."

"But, this has got the best of me, And I can't seem to sleep. And it's not just you're alone with me. It's just you never leave."

"You said this is suicide. I said this is a war. And I'm losing the battle. Battle, this is. Oh. And this is what you call love? This is our war; our cause."

Your "This is not the best of me section" Should be the same as the one above. Just it uses "it's not just you're alone with me. It's just you never leave." twice

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Bron-Y-Aur Stomp
Led Zeppelin
This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
