With my out of tune guitar we walked from bar to bar
We were only 17 but we were going to be stars
Came across a man who could stop the world with a clap of his hands
Said you've got the attitude. Who's got the attitude for rock?

But she was never going to be a star
She would swim rivers
And climb mountains far away
But who caught the maid and made her come?
When she was shining like the rising sun
Shining like the rising sun
You shine like the sun

So welcome to the town where drag queens made the cash
Selling kids acid tabs. We tried to find their stash
But acid’s no good. So I got over that. I’m much too old for taking crap
And who’s got the attitude for ice now?

Oh he was never meant to be a boy
He would climb rivers
And swim mountains the wrong way
But who caught the babe and made him cry?

Oh I wanted you but your eyes don’t shine like they used to
God I want it all but you guys don’t like all the old songs
Old songs, new songs, everybody write, write on
Little honey we can write all night, write on
As long as you’ve got stars in your eyes you keep me coming back to you
Keep me coming, keep, keep me coming

Oh I wanted you but your eyes don’t shine like they used to
God I want it all but you guys don’t like all the old songs
So write on, write on.
As long as you’ve got stars in your eyes you keep me coming back to you

Oh she was never going to be a star
But who has got the attitude from love anyway?

General Commenti wonder, perhaps Hayley is talking about herself? 'we were only 17 but we were going to be stars' ??
after all, it is set in the first person and it is quite nostalgic.

    just a thought

General CommentThe one thing about the jezabels' writing is that it is layered. I think it is about ambition to be famous, about how they haven't got time for their personal relationships. It has a lot to do with being gay as well. Love this song/this band.

General Commentwhy is there only four comments for one of the best songs of all time! i love the references to drugs in this song and the highness of hayleys voice in the last lines. i think this song is about two teenagers (boy and girl) having fun times playing music on the streets.

    My InterpretationI thinksss

To me, i get a story of a boy and a girl, trying to achieve their dreams. She wants to be a star, he wants to be a girl. (She was never meant to be a star, he was never meant to be a boy)

They both spend so much time trying to be what they want to be, they lose track of other things, like eachother, and even get into situations they shouldn't be in.. (Came across a man who could stop the world with a clap of his hands. Said you've got the attitude. Who's got the attitude for rock?) (So welcome to the town where drag queens made the cash. Selling kids acid tabs.)

So then, they realize just how much they are changing themselves (Who's got the attitute for rock/ice now?) and try to get back to how they used to be, since it isn't worth it if they aren't really themselves. (Oh I wanted you but your eyes don't shine like they used to. God I want it all but you guys don't like all the old songs) aka "i really want this but it's losing it's luster"

They pretty much decide that as long as they have each other they can say screw the fame dream and get back to the fun they were having in the first place. (As long as you've got stars in your eyes you keep me coming back to you.Keep me coming, keep, keep me coming)

One day they'll get to where they want to be, but they're only 17. What's the rush? They have plenty of time to jump through hoops to make it big.....or be a girl... [that im not entirly sure about to be honest]. Like a "who wants this anyway" thing. (But who has got the attitude for* love anyway?)

    Somethinggg like thatttt >_<"
