This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

This sounds like a call to really examine the meaning of life, because everyone will die someday and "wake up" face to face with the creator of the universe (a place far away). He keeps saying throughout the song "this is a dream" due to the fact this life is but a vapor. This life will end quickly and we will wake up to the eternal reality when we die.

I believe the chorus means that if you don't make a decision about who your God and savior is, you will by default go to hell. Therefore all is lost if you hesitate. Counting the cost of living life for others instead of you, and vice versa. Living for yourself will only send you to hell. He states how he was born a trucker's son, most likely stating how he isn't the (truck) driver of his life, but the son. More than likely a reference to Jason Martin's faith in Jesus Christ.

Most likely referring to the fall of Adam and Eve, and Jason Martin's desire to remove sin from the human race.

In the end, the song looks like a call to "Wake up" spiritually.
