Living your life in the gray
Is the new American way
We're spending what we haven't made

And we save our money in good faith
And we work hard for our living wage
But still the banks got to break

Because the dream's a lie
And the snake, it bit you
When you were awake
And the books all fried
You are bankrupting
Because all the loans you take

Big wave, do do do
Big wave, do do do
Big wave
It's going to hit you with a big wave

I can't sleep these days
And my blues, they won't go away
So there are these little pills I been taking
And my doctor, she says that they're safe
But I been sleepwalking down to the lake
And waking up in the water

And the feeling's a lie
But the snake, it bit me
When I wasn't awake
And the scripts, they lie
I have been poisoned from
All the things I take

Big wave, do do do
Big wave, do do do
Big wave
It's going to hit me with a big wave
Big wave, do do do
Big wave, do do do
Big wave
It's going to hit you with a big wave

I know you feel deprived
(You don't trust me)
All of us still alive
(You never touch me)
It's really just that I don't feel
Like it much these days

And my love's a lie
Because the snake, he visits me
When you are away
And your dreams don't lie
I have been corrupted
Because all the lovers I take

Big wave, do do do
Big wave, do do do
Big wave
You're going to hit me with a big wave
Big wave, do do do
Big wave, do do do
Big wave
It's going to hit you with a big wave

Big wave, da da da
Big wave, do do do
Big wave
It's going to hit you with a big wave

General CommentGreat song. Pretty much about someone spiraling into darkness as a consequence of their irresponsible life choices. I think Jenny tries to say this is a condition of America. I love how the snake changes so many times in this song eventually becoming some guy's junk. Awesome.

General CommentI love this song! Jenny performed it at one of her shows last summer and said that it was about California.

My InterpretationCool song. I always thought it was referring to a biblical punishment for our sins, because of the biblical references - the snake representing sin and the big wave is the great flood that God sent to wipe out a mankind which he viewed as too wicked and sinful.

But then I started to think that it's about our inability to escape or postpone our own suffering because they'll catch up with us in one go (ie the 'big wave'). If you borrow money to pay the bills (verse 1), you're only going to end up in more debt that needs to be paid one day. The sleeplessness or anxiety you suffer (verse 2) can't be resolved with a few pills because the root cause will come back to bite you, and may do so in more harmful ways (sleepwalking into the river) than if you didn't try to sidestep it. Sleeping around to escape relationship problems (verse 3) only causes more relationship problems to deal with. I didn't read that the snake at any point represents some guy's junk (the snake he visits me?). Normally it represents temptation into sin, but if it makes you think of a guy's junk, you go for it!

But, as with many songs, we're not limited to one interpretation and Jenny may well have mixed a few different threads to make her story.
