It started out when I was six
I played a string for every year I lived
I was 13 when you got sick
But I knew we could push through it
I didn't really say that I loved you
But you knew you knew you knew
Down and out, through and through
You know I'll always need you
I don't know where we'll be, where we'll be in 50 years
I just hope we'll be together again
I don't know where I'll be, where I'll be in 50 years
All I know is where I've been
We can start again
Cause we were kids back then
Where have you been, you haven't called
I guess you haven't missed me at all
We were 17 thinkin' we're in love,
We were 18 when we broke up
I didn't really say that I loved you
But you knew you knew you knew
Down and out, through and through
You know I'll always love you
I don't know where we'll be, where we'll be in 50 years
I just hope we'll be together again
I don't know where I'll be, where I'll be in 50 years
All I know is where I've been
We can start again
Cause we were kids back then
It started out three weeks ago
I got that letter that you wrote
Studied every line it read
it started out with the line that said
I didn't really say that I loved you
But you knew you knew you knew
Down and out, through and through
You know I'll always need you
I don't know where we'll be, where we'll be in 50 years
I just hope we'll be together again
I don't know where I'll be, where I'll be in 50 years
All I know is where I've been
We can start again
Cause we were kids back then

General CommentI think this song is about different relationships in Mat's life. For instance, he has said that the part that says "I was thirteen when you got sick," he is referring to when he found out his birth father had a drug problem.
